I'm all for the Book of Revelations beasts, personally. Or machines becoming sentient.

How about the scenario set out in Stephen King's The Stand? Just a flu virus which is capable of killing roughly 99% of the worlds population. Simple and rather elegant, humanity defeated by a few pieces of RNA and protein. There's a holy war in there as well, but lets concentrate on the virus thing for the moment.

The Matrix version, where we all just become battery packs for the machines and live in stasis completely oblivious to reality. After watching the Animatrix and finding out what awful dicks humans were in that Universe, I started rooting for the robots.
