John Woo: Hard-Boiled alone earns him status as a kick-ass director
Guy Ritchie: If you've ever encountered me, you'll know how I love Guy Ritchie, and his London Gangster flicks.
Matthew Vaughn: Kick-ass and Layer cake. Hm.

Well this thread is certainly a little bereft of discussion value so far isn't it. I'll add why I like my directors just to give people something to look at besides a list.

Uwe Boll - because he's a promotional genius with a sense of humour and his films are fun. Of course everyone hates him but I think people have just forgotten what fun is.
Lars Von Trier - the biggest bastard in film-making, watching his films is a joy because I know that deep down he and I are on the same wavelength.
Richard Wolstonecroft - my favourite director of completely morally bankrupt cheese.
Jim Jarmusch - total Michael Bay antidote, everything is sloooooow, but never boring. He's also where Tarantino stole a lot of his ideas, especially for Pulp Fiction.
Wong Kar-Wai - it's good that someone knows how to do proper romance stories now that Hollywood has forgotten.
Ang Lee - the most balls-out director ever, tries his hand a multiple styles of film and always succeeds, also not afraid of pissing off the Chinese government.
David Lynch - Rabbits. That is all.

There is a serious lack of Robert Rodriguez in this thread.

He has made movies such as his $7000 debut, El Mariachi, and others like Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, Planet Terror, and Machete.

The way he shoots his films truly shows a great understanding of film and how to handle a camera. And then he tops it off with great action, an underlying story that makes sense and isn't annoying, and great humour.

Of course, he's made a couple of bad movies, like the Spy Kids and Aqua Girl ones. But every director has.

Other ones are pretty obvious:

- Sergio Leone
- Francis Ford Coppola
- Quentin Tarantino
- John Woo
- Stanley Kubrick
- Steven Spielberg
- George Lucas
- Martin Scorcese

Steven Speilberg - Jurassic Park
Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds

Two of my favourite films of all time.

EDIT: Looks like I've already been ninja'd with this one :)

James Cameron pre-Avatar.
Avatar was pretty good, but Aliens and Terminator are some of his best works.
