Feel free to include any crazy cryptozoology monsters like Nessie and Bigfoot if you like.

My favourite creature would have to be The Phoenix. I love the idea of something that can bounce back from the ashes no matter how many times it gets burned.

Close runners up include the Hydra, the Gorgons (Medusa), and Robot Pirate Ninja Jesus.

I'd have a toss-up between a gryphon or phoenix. Both I find as majestic animals and more importantly, their attitude towards humans is usually non-threatening. So at least the food-chain will remain unharmed.

Medusa, especially the one from the old Clash Of The Titans (not that fiasco with Sam Worthington in it)

Cthulu. Runner up goes to the common representation of Angels. Not saying they don't exist, it's just that if they do, they have 6 wings that cover up their body because it would blind us.

Griffins. They're such majestic yet also violent creatures. At one point they can be flying through the air, soaring above the creatures below, then suddenly dropping down to strike fear into whomever it chooses. Plus they the coolest mounts ever.

Näcken. A norse mythological creature who sits in the middle of dangerous streams and rivers, luring people to come dance with him by playing a violin (or sometimes lure), and as they are enchanted by his music and try to join him in the stream, they drown.

Anything that has breasts.

Gorgons, mermaids, harpies; There's just something about being attracted yet at the same time being weirded out by a creature.

I'm also a fan of trolls though. Even before I had the internet.

I like the kraken. I find it hard to pick a favorite, there are just too many.
Actually I like Titans as well, there some bad ass mother fudgers right there.

The Basilisk. Not the wimpy wishy-washy fare from Harry Potter, the proper kill-your-ass mythological badass. Ditto the Phoenix.

Spriggans... purely because the only way to scare them off is to throw an item of clothing turned completely inside out at them.

1/2 Black Dragon, 1/4 Dark Elf, 1/4 Yeth Hound.

If you play D&D, you might know the base creatures. Think about one creature made of all three. Epicness.

It doesn't. Well, it does in pop culture, but not in mythology. The original would combine a funeral pyre for itself with a nest for its egg. It doesn't get reborn, another one replaces it.

Yeah, the various sorts of angels are much more interesting than randoms people with wings andthe sun behind their heads.

...

Oh, special mention to drop bears. Because way, way back (not sure when, possibly before humans evolved), Australia was home to arboreal crocodiles, which would leap down onto their prey. Drop crocs. [small]Wasn't a big advantage, so apparently they moved back to the ground[/small].
