Personally, mine was when I lived in Brazil, and I got a Game Boy Color. I started playing Pokemon Blue and couldn't figure out how to leave the starting house. My mom pointed it out...I felt shamed.

Also, same game, in Victory Road, I couldn't figure out how to move the rocks to exit....never figure it out.

You guys?

Playing Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past. In the second dungeon right before the boss chamber it took me forever to realize you had to light all 4 torches to make the wall move.

To be fair, I was 5.

When i was playing God Of Thunder, i never realized that you can hit little light bulb things to open up areas, so i was stuck in the first level until i accidentally did so...given i was 8 at the time i thought i was pretty smart for figuring it out.

Mine would have to be playing against Kraid in Super Metroid. I had been playing a little bit (getting spooked) and then I see a mini-Kraid. I kill him and I think, damn that was hard. Then I meet the real Kraid. I'm not even the size of his head... maybe the size of his eyeball. I die... a lot. But I keep trying and eventually I...give up for a couple of months. But then I come back and I beat that guy to hell.

I remember having a hell of a problem with King Dedede in the first Kirby on the gameboy. I was on holiday in australia with my parents' and one of our guides kids showed me how to do it. At the time I didn't speak english (I was 8-9 or so) That was a prime example of gaming bringing people together across continents and languages XD

When I first played Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64, I couldn't figure out how to get past a certain locked gate on the first mission. I assumed that you had to find a key, but as it turns out, you just had to shoot it.

Rings of Power
On the Megadrive/Genesis. I spent loads of a summer holiday (I lived in the country). I had a note book, with chapters for each ring. It was my first RPG. I think I was too young. I've kept it.

I hope to get a Megadrive again and give it another go. The graphics on the box look shocking though.

I had a problem with a configuration of a graphics card in a 486 PC. My Dad told me to read the manuals and open the casing to sort the architecture myself (you had to open it to physically change the circuit board's IRC jumpers). I was so pleased with myself when I worked out what to do and my Dad had let me loose inside his computer

I really sucked at Wizards and Warriors for the NES, but when I tried playing it a decade later it was easy as hell.

Also in Hero's Quest (later renamed Quest for Glory due to trademarks) there is a part where you have to get a ring from a birds nest, and it was about the size of 1 pixel on our 386 laptop, so it was nearly impossible to click it. I had my older sister do it for me :p.

I think it 1991 when I was playing these games, so I was 4 years old, or so.

My first challenge was probably back when i started playing Super Mario Bros on the NES, it took me quite a while until i realised you didnt have to press forward at all times, but that you could actually slow down and time the jumps and even move some in the air, once i figured that out, it got easy :p

My first real challenge would have to be the second boss of LoZ oracle of ages. That **** was COMPLICATED. And the only hint the game gives you is 'the red face doesn't like smoke' which meant 'drop a bomb onto the top of the boss so that it lands when it turns red.' Freaking ridiculous.

Also that wasn't my first challenge ever, but I'm counting it as that because it's the first game I actually OWNED that I had trouble with. All the others were me playing at a friend's house, and most of that was caused by simple 'hands go where?' on the controller.

I could not figure out Monopoly when I was young.

I now understand it, but I still don't understand why it's fun for some people.
