After reading a thread the other day where there was an argument over why one person couldn't understand why they would use a console it got me wondering why people choose one platform over the other. So in this thread I am asking the simple question of what platforms do you use and the reason(s) why you do.

Before I say mine I must point out that this is not a thread to start console wars or be a PC elitist.

I mostly play on my 360, the reason I chose this was at the time I bought it the 360 was a fair bit cheaper than the PS3 and I did not really see a reason to justify spending more on what seemed to be a similar product (I don't really care to much for Blu-Ray movies). Also to me the controllers felt better in my hands compared to the PS3's controllers. Personally I hate the PS3 controller but I know many people love it. The last reason why I use my console more than my laptop is because I prefer to have a controller in my hands over a keyboard and mouse (yes i know you can use controllers on PCs but I just can't be bothered haha).

I also currently use my laptop for some older games that I wasn't able to play or can't find copies of them anymore and games like Counter Strike. My laptop isn't the best at running games which is why I am limited to what I can play but that is what my 360 is for.

Lastly I have a 3DS and this is so I can play Pokemon and also Ocarina of Time.

So why do you use the platform you do?

I'm a PC gamer, primarily. Mostly because I needed to buy a pretty powerful computer anyway for all my musical shit (I use some pretty intensive plug-ins) and then thought; "Hey! I don't own anything I can play modern games with! I might as well buy a decent graphics card, too!"

Basically, because I was buying a meaty PC anyway, it was cheaper for me to get a GPU instead of a console. Plus I've always enjoyed PC gaming, but been a few years behind, tech-wise (my last PC was a Pentium 4 machine from 2003) so it was nice to be able to catch up for a change.

I also have a 3DS, which I was given for the Christmas before last. I mostly use it for DS games, but I've also been enjoying Resident Evil: Revelations, Ocarina of Time, and that Ghost Recon TBS whose name escapes me...

My brother does own a PS3 and 360, but I've been considering getting a PS3 for myself so I can enjoy all the console-exclusives I barely get a chance to play. Platform loyalty isn't something I've ever really *gotten*

Recently I've been playing the most on PS3 and PC.
PS3 because I got one recently and have about 7 years of exclusives to catch up on. PC because my steam backlog is fucking massive so I figure I may as well get through stuff like The Witcher 2 while I can.

PC because I need one anyway for net access / work / whatever so I figure why not kill two birds with one stone. Plus it's got better backwards compatibility. Plus I much prefer mouse and keyboard to gamepads as the control method for the majority of games I play.

I use my 360 for online multiplayer with mates.

I use my PS3 for its exclusives.

I use my 3DS for the massive amount of JRPGs and other exclusives.

I use my Wii for mostly Nintendo games.

And finally I use my PC for Multi platform games and everything else.

Have a 360. Got it as a gift back in 2006 since it was the cheapest on the market. Used it for several years (Not the same one of course). Recently got a PC since I needed a new one anyway, and figured that I'd go ahead and switch over to PC gaming since I'm worried about the next console generation and I had the money for it. I've been loving it seeing as I love strategy games and I've been able to enjoy all those strategy games I've missed over the past decade.

I have a PS3 and it's the only gaming platform I've ever owned. I chose it over other consoles because my limited past experiences in gaming had primarily been with the Playstation and PS2, I also liked that it doubled as a DVD player and I've even embraced Bluray movies since I had something to play them on.

Believe it or not I mostly play on my PS2 nowadays. I've collected some good titles which I have yet to unwrap. There is no rush. After that I would say I probably do most of my gaming on the PC.

I use my 360 the most as it's the one I play with my friends on the most. That and back when it was launched, I had a shitty ass computer so I couldn't really play on PC that much. I am looking to get a decent gaming PC soon (In about two to four weeks if I get the work.) so I'll probably split my time between the two when that arrives here. :D

I got my Wii as a gift.

I got my 360 broken, but fixed it in like 5 minutes (broken tray button).
-It's nice have, stupid, well to do friends

I got my PS3 "broken" and 'fixed' it by using the STILL VALID warranty to get a NEW console.
-It's nice have PANTS-ON-HEAD RETARDED classmates.

I have a pretty good laptop for gaming.
-It can run Skyrim on 'High', with LOTS and LOTS of mods, with little issue.

I also have a DS because, well, ATLUS.
-It's just a REALLY great handheld.

I have a PSP because it was a gift.
-It's now my main MP3 player.

In the next year I'll need to upgrade, but I primarily play on PC. Less input lag, generally tighter controls, more control options, better performance, and higher resolutions - On good ports, at least.

I use my PS3 for console exclusives.

I use my PS Vita for handheld gaming.

I use my Xbox 360 for the few exclusives it has, and any console games I'm interested in that I can't find on the PS3.

Aside exclusive games, I tend to buy fighting games or games with multiple discs on Xbox for my PS3. Xbox is for shooters or flight sims. I also check the web for the superior version of multiplatform console games and buy them on their respective console.
I don't use handhelds that much but I do own a PSP, a DS, 3DS and a Vita.

I have a gaming PC too, but I find gaming on it a little too distracting, surfing webs and all that. I primarily buy old games on PC, or RPGs with character-creation to take screenshots.

Considering getting a WiiU to play Wii games I missed.

I find that very easy to believe. The PS2 was and still is awesome and has a fucking massive game catalog.

I own a PS3, Wii, and PC. My Wii is only used for exclusives. My PC is for games that play better with K&M and my PS3 is my main platform since most of the games I enjoy play best with a controller and I like the PS3 controller and exclusives over the 360s. I also love the consoles simplicity where I boot it up and put in a game and it works, unlike PC's. I seem to have a TON more PC problems then most, I installed windows updates for the first time in 2 years and now I have a memory leak so I don't have enough ram to play games unless I close everything and then it still lags (I need to upgrade my ram but that would just hide the problem and not tell me why it happened).

I won my 3DS, but I kept it because it's pretty cool. I'm mostly PC because I grew up with a mouse and keyboard. I couldn't do the timing based gameplay a shooter requires on a console as well as the lack of community and creativity. Mods are rampant on the PC, and, yes. I foam at the mouth as a fanboy for Valve. Steam gives me games for super-cheap. You don't get that anywhere else.

A console is too expensive and doesn't offer any freedom. I also can't code, manage VM's, configure, or edit documents on a console. PC's have an amazing unlimited selection too. If you're a windows guy, where could you go wrong? :3

With that said, some games are built for the consoles, and don't transition well at all on the PC. Not because they're "shitty ports" but the gameplay restrictions just don't work. Dead Space felt very, very wrong on the PC. I needed the 360 for it.

That's like me, also there is the problem for me that if for some reason my laptop can't run a game for a reason besides my laptop not being up to spec I probably won't be able to work around it unless there is a detailed guide to fix it because I am not the best at using computers. An example would be that I tried playing an old copy of THPS 3 but because my laptop is newer it couldn't run it and I found a work around but it was too complicated for me. This is the main reason my 360 is my main gaming platform.

I am primarily a PC gamer, mostly because I really have no use for a TV.

So I don't have a tv.

So I don't have a console.

Consoles are typically more beneficial to game makers than they are gamers. Standardizing the game experience for all of your players is something that is constantly sought after in game programming, and with Consoles, this process is much more simple.

I use all platforms because I hate not being able to get the game I want.

I got a Wii U which works great for the games I have for it, also loving the remote function which means I can swap to my blu-ray player and PS3, adjust the sound or turn it on/off.

I got the PS3 because of Tales of Graces F. I already had my awesome blu-ray player so that didn't affect my purchase one bit.

I got the Xbox 360 for Tales of Vesperia (you're seeing a trend here now, aren't you).

I got the Wii for Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World (yeah, you've spotted it already) and some other games I have come to love.

3DS for handheld gaming.

Now the PC is for all multiplatform titles. My PC can do anything I want. I can plug it up to a Wiimote, a PS3 controller, Xbox 360 controller and mouse + keyboard. I need PC for fps and rts games, I love it for not having to change discs (Steam) and for being an important tool.

Over the last 3 months, it's been PC as my main, and a little SNES and GBA on the side. I shouldn't have to explain why, but feel free to quote me if you need to be reminded.
