So, it's exam period for me, which means doing ridiculous old gaming stuff in order to avoid getting addicted to current gaming stuff, because as we all know, that would be very bad for my grades.

One of my favourite games ever is No One Lives Forever (the first one, I actually despise the sequel), and I've beaten it a couple of times. Just, you know, shootin' around and enjoying the story. But I decided to go for fullblown ultimate hardcore difficulty by beating it on Superspy (ie. the highest) difficulty setting and getting all the intelligence items, thus receiving Superspy rating on every mission.

And I must say, I'm almost through, and it's been going quite well. I must be quite the hardcore chap amongst today's QTE-grown gaming youngsters. Some snags here and there, but I've pulled through. I'm now on The Indomitable Cate Archer - Scene 4, and knowing the game, I'm confident I will make it. Volkov and the end fight won't be easy, but I'll get them eventually. This game won't have any secrets left for me when I'm done with it. And I will be able to study for my Psychology exam. I really will.

Actually, there's one little thing. Normally I never cheat, but I had to during the Armstrong fight. You have to hit him 30 or 40 times and he's got you dead in 3 or so. He's got an unavoidable move. There's a glitch where, according to gamefaqs, he can't hit you when you jump on one of the beds and you can just pummel him, but they don't mention that he just starts chucking grenades at you. I was despairing at the 50th attempt (I've marked them, don't ask), but at the 70th I simply gave up, looked up god mode, activated it, finished the thing, then deactivated god mode again. Further difficult parts (like the timing on that snowy ledge before getting your stuff back) required save scumming, but that's normal. I haven't touched a cheat since, nor will I. I will complete the game, then lie restless, because there was this one bit where I cheated. My success will not be complete.

It will be my life's mission to defeat that bastard on Superspy difficulty without cheating. Maybe save scumming. Because that's what I did on the parachuting scene (goddamn that's hard otherwise), but No Cheating.
(And no, you youngsters, save scumming isn't the same as cheating. You still have to do the thing and if the thing's difficult...)

Magnus Armstrong, on Superspy difficulty, of the game No One Lives Forever, is my White Whale.
So what's yours?

So, let me get this straight.

White Whale = A moment where you cheated in a game, and (Appanrently), that was the ONE and ONLY moment, you completed all the rest of the game without cheats.

Thats what you mean?

Well if so... I dont think I have any of those moments at all. I rarely cheat, both because I just simply dont like to cheat the game out, (> except if because of a bug or an error of sorts it would work and say, erases an item in my inventory and I add it back with the console. Yes I am looking at you Skyrim. Anyways I dont thing this counts) and even when I DO want to cheat (for messing around purposes), I am just simply too lazy to look up how to do the cheat. That, and the fact than theres little to no cheats in today games anyways.

No, I mean (and I will edit my post) when there's a challenge, any challenge, you just cannot overcome, but are determined to do so before you die. It doesn't have to involve cheating.

Oh. Well that makes it all easier then. Althougt I am not sure if this one counts since I have actually beaten the bastard, but:

I nominate Crawmerax from Borderlands 1. Final Bonus Boss, took me around 3 days to finally defeat him (and the run of when I DID, it took me 30 fucking minutes. Thats A LOT considerating this is a rpg/fps what we are talking about). I must of have died to it at least 80 times before I killed it. But, as the thread say, I was determined? HELL YES. SO MUCH.- Theres a reason I loved this fight, it was so horribly difficult and yet FAIR (For the most of the part), I loved every second of it. Especially when it finally fell down, lolol. Just words cant describe how awesome this whole fight was. I still maintain it as one of the best boss fights that I have ever played, in the difficult but fair deparment.

The fact than the game itself its a cakewalk UNTIL this one fight just makes the difficult of this fight even more obvious.

Obviously, this was done SOLO, no other people to help (I heard it is actually kinda easy but 4 sirens, the OP class of the game, but then again begin so overpowered is boring).

SO... I hope this actually has to do with the thread at all, I hope.

Doom, nightmare difficulty runs. I've had mixed results with it. Alien Vendetta is the wad that I have personal grudge against.

After dying over 150 times of Uncharted 3 Hard mode, I imagine my eventual Crushing playthrough will be something like this.

Well, once, I used a Gameshark on my Gameboy so I could catch a Slowpoke within the first hour of Pokemon Ruby. That's about it.

It was an awesome Slowpoke.

Call of Duty 4. Mile High Club on Veteran. I just can't pull that shit off, I'm naturally someone who is careful and takes their time in shooters so having to rush through and complete the mission so fast is completely unnatural for me.

Also Halo ODST had that one really difficult firefight achievement you needed to get Recon armor or whatever it was I cared too much about at the time that I could never manage to pull off either.

I'd like to beat Super Mario Bros. 3 one day. Either with cheats or with out, wasn't the first game I ever played but one of first I really loved.

Man I rented that game once for the PS2, it was sooooo freaking fun.

I couldn't get past the part where you had pick-pocket people though. Never picked it up again.

Is your username a Dark Tower reference, or are you just a Swedish person who enjoys turtles?

OT: I will have had one, but for the life of me, I cannot remember.

i really don't cheat like that.

i save scum a lot, and i do actually consider that cheating, but then i also consider saving to be cheating on a conceptual level so i don't think save scumming is any more cheating than normal.

sometimes i'll manipulate numbers to 'save time' if i'm doing something monotonous that has 0 risk/cost, but will take me more time than i'm willing to tolerate. i'll just advance the numbers to my goal since all i'm doing is skipping the part where i press some button combination 10,000 times. however, i won't do this if the action does have some kind of risk or cost or side-benefit with numbers i can't control. in this case i'll just tolerate the process.

also, i'll unlock locked difficulty modes if they require me to beat the game to unlock legit. i can't be asked to replay the same game multiple times like that for no reason. i'll just start at the highest difficulty if i can. i won't do this for locked special modes though. i'll unlock them legit if they are different from the normal game somehow.

other than those, i really can't think of any god mode or item get or puzzle bypass type of cheats i'd ever consider using.

I'm proud to say I have already killed my white whale. I was obsessed with the Ancient Cave in Lufia 2, and was determined to collect every one of the Iris Treasures. Doing so gets you nothing, but after several years of random play I finally got every one of them.

I supposed you could call getting Doc Mercy to drop an Infinity pistol in Borderlands 2 to be another challenge, but I don't play that POS anymore so I won't include it.

There's a flashbang for every room. The only time you should stop for cover is when the door breaks off and before the final room with seats. When you're in the final room, use an automatic weapon and just keep spraying while you run down the hall. Be sure to get a headshot on the hostage taker.

It is.

I'll get every achievement for every game I own on PC. That's just going to happen.

I've got a few- one is getting to the first extraction point in Morton in After Montignac in OpFlash (it gets overrun by the enemy when you're still miles away, and it's a massive struggle just to stay alive *anywhere*

Another is completing my own set route in Driver 1. San Francisco take a ride. Invincibility is allowed, and even that won't save you.

Lastly, I've always wanted to hole up with 006 in the Facility room in Goldeneye and hold our ground against the waves of guards until Russia runs out of people. I know it's impossible- but I like to think that will be my final gaming session.

Crushing difficulty on Uncharted 2
-- Though I beat it later through glitching the cheat menu to get unlimited ammo and one hit kills. And it was still a ***** (since it didn't effect bosses, and the helicopter chase around the half-way point)

Other than that If I get stuck on games, I tend to give up and lower the difficulty or find another way to overcome it.

I AM an achievement whore, but I know my limits, and I will stop when I'm not enjoying myself.

My gaming Moby Dick is Ocarina of Time, a zelda game. I only ever played it as a kid and I could never beat it, I got stuck on like every damn temple. I mean I got the Master Sword, so not the first three temples, but all the others.

So one day I plan to get that game and CONQUER it.

I am tired of captcha asking me if I shop at Canadian Tire...

I killed my old white whale: A+ on every level in Hotline: Miami. Then there's the final level of Super Meat Boy that I just can't beat. I pretty much gave up on that though.

Those are the only times I've been flat out obsessed with beating something in a game, I usually just give up quick or lower the difficulty.
