Okay so just to give you all some background, I was kind of new to the whole RPG thing, I mean I gamed but really was only brought up on SNES & N64 until the PS2, Xbox, & GC came out and even back then we didn't really have a computer, I suppose I have one now but I'm to cheap to go and upgrade the damn thing so I can even run anything decent... So if you're wondering why titles like Baldur's Gate and the original Fallouts are not on my lists... it is because I have sadly not had the chance to play them :(

Western: Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, Elder Scrolls IV, Fallout 3, KOTOR

Japanese: Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy X, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, FFIV

KOTOR 1&2, Gothic 1&2, Morrowind and well....that's all i can remember. I have played almost all (Western)RPGs made since 2000 - 2009. But no, i can't remember the best ones.

E: Skies of Arcadia, The Last Remnant, Persona 3, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Shiren the Wanderer.

Planescape:Torment
Fallout 2
Baldur's Gate -saga

What's with the JRPG hate? There are some really good JRPGs out there.
The shitty combat, brain fucked stories and the female looking men?
Dude, that's not all of them. Just 95% of the ones in the past decade. When they all tried to copy Final Fantasy. I should know, I used to play them, and stopped when this shit happened. And no only play a select few.

Dragon Age gets an honorary mention for fantastic writing but pretty crappy gameplay.

JRPG:
Tales of Symphonia (awesomesauce)
FFIX

Good to see some people who arn't putting DAO up on their list.
I could go one and on about DA:O, but my stance could be condenced into this:

A remake of The Classic, Cliché RPG with some nice graphics. Good for one playtrough. It's good the first time, somewhat decent the second. There are far better RPGs with better controls, equal gameplay, far better story and greater replayability out there.

DA:O was good, but not great. It's just too cliché, all the 'plot twist' can be seen halfway trough.

So yeah... didn't quite make the list. And there are many out there who think the same. It's just that it's one of the few RPGs released during the past year, so people remember it more than most. In three years, it will be forgotten in the annals of time as a mediocre RPG that made some serious bucks but ultimately failed to impress.
