"Update your YouTube account by linking to a Google Account
You will no longer be able to sign in to YouTube without a Google Account.
If you do not want to link this YouTube account, you can sign out here."

Wah WhAT?!!1?1

I've had a YouTube account for ages. In general the more accounts and passwords I have means less user-friendliness and all round annoying. Does anyone know why they are forcing people to do this other than the usual reasons such as money or increasing account registration?

THIS IS MADNESS!

It's probably to make people easier to contact in cases of copyright infringement.

Its not that difficult to make a google account. I understand everyone's frustration and all, but I don't see youtube changing their policy any time soon. I mean I remember when youtube forced everyone to change their channel to the beta channels and I couldn't find anyone who liked them, and I saw many videos from users who are considered somewhat "popular" imploring youtube to give people the choice to choose what type of account they had (between the classic and the beta) and youtube didn't listen (at least to my knowledge). Youtube will keep on doing stuff like this and I think their response is usually something along the lines of "you either like it, or don't, it doesn't really matter to us" as long as people keep logging in and watching videos. I don't mind youtube that much to be honest with you, I use the videos to have something on in the background while I am doing other things, so they are going to have to do something quite monumental for me to portray them as "evil"

Because Google owns YouTube and they want to melt it into one of their services (like gmail, chat, docs, 3d warehouse,...) and for that they need a joined user database.

Makes sense to me... google owns youtube, and probably want only one authentication portal to manage.

Usually the auth systems get merged when one site gets bought out by another one.
Tho there's nothing to stop you from having TWO google accounts, if you don't want your mail and youtube vids under the same one. (In fact, google do allow you to sign in with more than one account at a time)

Er, well Google owns Youtube so it isn't really that much of a big deal to me, Google is all about using your account to integrate everything so this doesn't surprise me all that much. Plus it might make it easier for them to detect sock accounts and spammers and the like.

I more annoyed by how all of the youtube videos seem to stream now instead of loading up as you watch them. It was annoying in the past to watch a video only for it to suddenly pause so it could continue to load. Now the videos show that they're fully loaded...only to buffer every other second for several seconds. Then once the video hits it's midpoint, it will either enter buffer-limbo or, go back to the very beginning of the video, unprovoked.

Stupid youtube...of course it's probably just my DSL which apparently is the least reliable kind of internet connection (but only since I got it anyway)

2010: "Whoah, careful, don't click this thing... CAREFUL!"

2011: "Goddamn, now all the Youtube "porn" will be linked to my gmail."

Why doesn't Google get that some things better be kept private and separate. Now, there ain't any real porn, but centralizing everything doesn't do good for privacy and security.

EDIT: What I meant is that Youtube is so not serious it is not worthy of having to input your email password every time you need to share some useless video with someone. Now that they are linked, the uselessness of Youtube is a security risk for the seriousness of my email.

And... what? Advertising? Who the fuck cares for that (I have google's ad DNSs blocked).

I don't see this as a big deal. YouTube is owned by Google, it makes sense for them to want you to do that. If you don't want to then just don't log in.

Eh, can't say I'm too bothered about this. I'm not going to act stupid and say something like 'hurr i r immune to advertising, does not affect me', but I don't spend much time in Youtube/social networking circles and when I do, I can't even remember my password so being able to sign in with my Google account is actually pretty good.

Honestly, I know people are worried about privacy, but it's like Google is missing the evil-genome. When have they ever done a piece of truly nasty corporate work? What, so they share your age and demographic with advertisers? So what? You are a number; a statistic. Nobody cares about your personal details beyond selling you stuff, and if they're selling you stuff that you might actually want to buy, well heck, why not?

Besides, keeping seperate accounts as you expand your empire just leads to the Microsoft accounts syndrome: A million different things to sign up to, terrible redirects, and absolutely no specification as to which login to use.

The evil thing is that even though I really WANT to delete my YT account now, I cannot do so without creating a google-account for that very same purpose in the first place. :p
There's no obvious or easy way to contact YT for that kind of problem.

This is one of the lesser issues concerning youtube. The bigger issue being forced to watch 30 second commercials before every single video you start looking at. When skimming through videos to find the one you are looking for this is to say the least, highly annoying. Hopefully a competitor manages to rise up somewhat by providing the experience youtube used to be. Before vevo, google and add-revenue started to ruin the original concept of the site.

I refuse to create a google account. Google is evil. Today I had to download Firefox because my Internet Explorer has developed issues since I left it running with Youtube on. Now, I'm not saying google infected my internet provider, but it is an odd coincidence that the one time my open browser is on Youtube instead of any non google site as per usual, something bad happens. Google knows I have it out for them from the message I sent them when I decided to distance myself from them.

I already had a Gmail, so it didn't bother me.

Google has taken over my life anyway, I remember when I first got my Android phone, I didn't realise it had anything to do with Google. Sneaky.
