Just thought I'd bring this over to the forum here, since I see Youtube videos embedded in a lot of threads, and my attempts to discuss this on Youtube Video comment sections just get drowned out by smegging flamewars; I've been watching stuff on Youtube for ages now, like pretty much everyone, but I'd never really made an account, and never randomly browsed the stuff available. It was always clicking Related Videos, or doing specific searches. Over the past month, however, my experiences on making my own channel- a non-gaming channel, so no need to get excited- has caused me to notice some... patterns... when it comes to Youtube's comments. Lately, it's been the sheer number of Let's Play channels.

For anyone who might not know, Let's Play channels generally consist of the channel owner playing some game, while they narrate or comment over the audio; often with a webcam showing their face in one corner. I first saw one a long-ass time ago, one of Pewdiepie's first Amnesia vids... and since then, it just seems that the number of such channels has EXPLODED. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people doing this lately, some playing retro games, many playing the same game at the same time; some of them only have a dozen subscribers. Others have hundreds of thousands. Even some people who have YouTube fame for some other reason, like Toby Turner, has gotten into doing Let's Plays.

This has led to some backlash, however, as a few people have started raising a ruckus because they believe that certain people are just trying to 'cash in;' doing these Let's Play videos for the ad revenue money. Not going to name names, because one of the strongest advocats against this, ironically, has his video monetized, making him a little hypocritical. And, yes, mine are monetized too, but you don't see me complaining about other people's moneymaking. Mostly. Anyway, these individuals believe that Toby and others- generally, those whose fanbase mostly come from some other Youtube channel thing- shouldn't do Let's Plays, and should step aside so 'proper' hardcore gamers can do it instead.

So, what do you guys think? Should there be some limit placed on who can post what? Should Top Youtubers just stick to what they know, and keep out of games altogether?

Personally, I don't. Even forgetting the whole 'freedom of expression' dealie, I don't think introducing more hardcore gamers would solve the problem; I believe the entire Let's Play phenomenon, and its popularity, harkens back to that old ritual where gamers would try out some new game themselves, while two or three friends sat on the couch pretty much just sitting and watching. Jokes aplenty flying, etc. Generally the really popular channels of this nature are because the viewers find the person charismatic, and the type of game he's playing doesn't really matter. By extension, whether or not the person playing the game is a 'hardcore' player like me doesn't really matter either, because hey, if I find them entertaining, I'm going to invest my time in watching them, and maybe even subscribe to their channel.

If these people want to draw in the tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of views, they should stride to make a more entertaining product and drag people in to watch them, not rant about how 'The Man,' so to speak, is keeping them down. End of the day, most of these Youtubers used to be in exactly the same position, trying to claw their way up to a high subscription count.

Considering how tiny my channel is, I can safely say I'm not speaking as 'The Man.' I admit, it'd be nice if everyone with a higher subscription count than me died peacefully in their sleep so they'd be out of the way... but I have only thirty-four subscribers, so it'd be a lonely planet if that happened.

Personally, I find a lot of the lets play stuff to be bloody annoying. If I wanted to see someone play a game, I would have probably gone and got the game already. I much prefer first impression series like "WTF is..." by TotalBiscuit. It's not bogged down by bullshit and gives me an incentive whether to buy a game or not, something a fourty part lets play doesn't do. And really, when your Skyrim lets play gets into the hundreds (looking at you Toby) then you know that really they're only doing it for the money instead of actually making the awesome content they're good at.

I prefer streams to Let's plays since you can actually communicate with the player.

I've watched a few streams, generally for the more obscure channels, though; the particularly popular ones, I can barely get a word in edgewise without it vanishing within six seconds under a flood of smilies and 'lols'

Totally missed that two people posted. Dx Gah, sleep after this reply. And yeah, Toastiest, I'll agree that Toby probably is in it for the money; not so much the playing games as bothering to record it for posterity, as he does seem enough of a goof to be at least a bit of a gamer.

The thing about it is, though, that if his stuff nevertheless entertains- and his view count suggest it does, as much as I'd like to go Highlander on his ass and Quickening my way to his sub count- then whether or not he's doing it for spending dough should be secondary. Honestly, if someone approached me and told me I could make monies playing videogames- which, second only to Youtube surfing, is one of my main hobbies- I'd be bouncing up and down with glee and giving said person hugs galore.

I usually prefer horror Let's Plays anyway; the new Grey mod, the various Slender maps, etc, etc. MUCH less scarring, emotionally, than trying to tackle that stuff myself. Dx

... I actually thought Let's Plays were dying out a little. They used to be a huge thing 2 or 3 years ago.
Or maybe there are more channels now, but fewer good ones...

What annoys me is that some big websites and people e-famous for other things now want to get into Let's Playing... and I fear they don't really get it.

It does still seem to be going fairly strong; at least one example I can list is that Let's Player Pewdiepie; poking around his videos, saw one in late April where he mentioned his subscriber count had reached the four hundred thousand mark. Checked his profile after; one point six million subscribers. =P Of course, that might just be all the existing Let's Play fans concentrating in a few specific groups, who knows.

Eh, but there's also the flip side; the amateur, non-celebrities who have also started making all these Let's Play channels because, well, Pewdiepie, Toby and Nova are super popular, looks cool. xD The celebrities get the most attention, of course, but I can't help but expect that a few completely unknown people start these channels up pretty much just hoping to be the next Let's Play Star, to the point where they might start aping jokes or signature quirks from more established performers. This is their ticket to fame. xD

The only lets play kinda things I ever watch are Cr1t1c4l's. His commentary on how to pick up women is hilarious.

I've been watching the stuff for almost 4 or 5 years, back when the average sub count for a Let's Player was around 15,000. Lots of the bigger ones get desensitized once they get into big numbers and lose the charm they held for me when they were less popular. Take NintendoCapriSun, who now censors his swearing. I personally stay with the "underground" people myself. God I sound like a hipster. And if you like horror Let's Play's, look up Helloween4545. He's a very quirky Brit who solely plays horror games.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, Slade. :3 I have to admit, even I was tempted to try going for Let's Plays when I first decided to make a channel, but then I joined a community forum for Youtubers and saw that DOZENS of people were doing it. On a page with channel ads, usually four out of five would be for Let's Plays. Decided the competition was a liiiiittle too steep, so went with social commentary. x3

And yeah, for the past couple of months, I'll even admit that whenever I decided I wanted to get a game, instead of looking for a review or something, I'd just find a Let's Play. x3 Much more effective, I think, of showing what a game is, rather than just hearing someone's largely subjective opinion on it.

People should be able to post whatever they want on Youtube. Personally I find Toby and Pewdipie hilarious for different reasons and if they make some money out of it good for them. Who wouldn't wanna make money from doing let's plays? And there's the occasional gem or two amoung the unknown let's players so the more the merrier.

The only LPs I watch are Jesse Cox's and Hannah (from the Yogscast).
JC is consistently funny, especially when he teams up with John 'TotalBiscuit' Bain or Eric 'WoWcrendor', and Hannah plays games that I have no interest in playing myself, but that I want to know what happens next in the story (AC: Revelations, Batman Arkham City).
Other than that, the over-saturation of LPs from complete hacks like Tobuscus, or UberHax0rNova, just annoy me, with their scenery chewing and ridiculous face-cam for the added 'hilarious' facial reactions.

I don't think it's right to publish a video of someone else's entire game and make money out of it. If the lets player didn't make money of it I guess it would be okay (posting a video of a game is kind of like posting the entire audio track of a movie). That said I've been watching GPLP and I'm pretty sure they make money of their Lets plays.

There have been a scare few video LPers that I really liked. There was one guy; something like "Cloud8745" who did Silent Hill and Fatal Frame LPs, and he was hilarious! However, others don't really have the same effect.

Recently, I've followed Something Awful Lps, especially one user by the name of The Dark Id. I like the format of text and screenshot, as well as user participation. But I love to read, so that works just fine for me.

LPs to people are like soda: there are many different flavors and even then, some people don't even want to drink it. So, that's my two cents on the matter.

I only really started watching Let's Plays when Skyrim came out and I wasn't going to buy the game for a while. I ended up watching 100 episodes from the same player. It takes less time to watch a let's play than play the game.

I do lean more towards the comedy ones such as Two Best Friends Play/Robbaz, but have been watching the ShackTac ones recently.

Things on the web tend to ebb and flow with popularity, of course everyone is going to jump on the bandwagon when they see people having success with it. The real test is to come back a year or so later and see who is still going with it.

The biggest problem I have with Lets Plays is how almost every one I've seen seems to try and generate more traffic by A: Shouting and freaking out in a completely over the top manner whenever something goes wrong and B: Swearing and using unnecessarily vulgar language. I'm fine with vulgar language but when someone refers to a TNT that releases water on Minecraft as a "Piss bomb" I can't help but wonder what other reason would possess them to call it that

I love let's plays, as long as I can stand the player. Pewdiepie is therefore a no go. I honestly can't fathom how this guy is so popular that he manages to make a living with his videos.

I've actually been in the habit of, instead of buying and playing games, just watching someone else play them on youtube. I don't even know why, apparently playing games is too much work for me. I'll take Game Grumps or Two Best Friends over any let's player any day though. Except maybe LtMkilla. He keeps hurling abuse at me, and I keep coming back.
