lol, seriously

http://e3.gamespot.com/special-feature/best-of-e3-2011/special-achievement/index.html?page=2

Rage was only one of the examples (there is also Far Cry 3, Twisted Metal, etc), but from E3 Zelda is one of the nominees for best graphics award (Readers Choice) from Gamespot.

WTF? How can Zelda be a nominee for that? It only shows how fanboys still exist in gaming journalism.

You could come with the argument of aesthetics over graphics but c'mon, just look at these images

Zelda: SS

RAGE

Far Cry 3

Just look at the trees, it isnt even good in terms of aesthetics, the character is the only thing good from the image, also in aesthetics.

Also, there is one huge game that would win against any other game in aesthetics and that is Rayman motherfuckin Origins

I imagine that the fact Zelda: SS is really g'damn colorful has to do with the decision.

RAGE, like every other 'serious' FPS ever made, is made of brown and shades of brown. People get tired of it after a while.

I do think Zelda: SS looks kinda 2D, though...but that's just me.

I prefer the Zelda screenshot.

Why?

Because I like the cartoony, less-realistic visuals of it.

I also loved Wind Waker's graphics. I also prefer Diablo 3's graphics to Diablo 2's.

Maybe I'm just a "fanboy", as you say, but I like to think that my tastes are driven differently than yours and, seemingly, everyone else's in this industry.

Rage doesn't really look interesting. Zelda is very pretty looking; I don't see a problem with it being nominated. Far Cry also looks good.

But yeah, Rayman looks fantastic.

It depends on the side of graphics you are looking at. Are you looking at how artistic a game looks? or are you looking at how freaking awesome the game looks? if looking at the latter, Rage or Farcry 3 wins, if your looking for the color and artistic part of it, then Zelda: SS is a definite win. If you are looking at both, or somewhere between, Rayman definitely pulls it off.

ITT: A game store and a game news & review site are interchangeable, and cartoony, non-realistic graphics should be compared to photo-realistic graphics.

Also, I personally like the art style of Zelda: SS over Rayman as well, but that's because I've seen more of Zelda: SS than just that one screenshot you found to try and make it look worse than it actually is.

Rage looks ugly to me. Woot, you have more pixels per square unit of a triangle...whatever technical talk I don't really understand.

What's the point of having great graphics if you're going to just squander it with a shitty art style? Skyward Sword has a wonderful look. I'd vote for it too.

I actually think that Zelda doesn't deserve to be on the list from that specific screenshot.
The graphics are sad. And the aesthetics are entirely average.
Look at it. It looks like a screenshot from ANY cartoony game on the PS2 (Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Jak. honestly, it looks just like the Neopets PS2 game). Maybe they have more to the aesthetics than that poorly chosen screenshot, but from what I see it's incredibly underwhelming. Just because you add color doesn't mean it's aesthetically original or pleasing. And choosing it solely based on that the fact that it isn't a brown FPS is a slap in the face to games who might overuse brown but deliver something interesting aesthetically.

Keep in mind that this is all based on that one screenshot as I haven't seen anything else about the Skyward Sword game (I don't really play Zelda).

Looking real isn't the same as having a style. The Skyward Sword pics show a distinct, colorful art style. RAGE and Farcry 3, on the other hand look real, admittedly very real, but don't really have anything to differentiate them from other real-looking shooters.

Zelda looks excellent, certainly more vibrant and interesting than the other screenshots (except one, I'll get to that), and the seemless blend of the Zelda: TP art style with an improved version of Zelda: WW's cell-shading/ less serious art style makes for something truly unique.

However, I personally, would go with Rayman Origins best graphics. Classic sprite-animated visuals with a totally zany, over-exaggerated aesthetic, beautifully illustrated. It looks unlike anything I've ever seen. It's appearance is totally insane without being distracting from gameplay.

I know you keep disclaiming that your opinion is based solely on that screenshot, but I'd at least watch the trailer before passing so much judgement.

Look, I get that cramming more polys into something and then browning and darkening it makes it look uber-realistic. I get that everything being a massive jumbled mess is "in".

That doesn't make it better.

The main difference between your brown and...more brown (Christ, they even knocked out the bloom and just flat out made it look like shit) screenies and the Zelda screenie is that I can immediately identify everything that I am looking at.

The graphics go with the aesthetic.

What the hell do the graphics tell me for the other two games? That it's gonna be moody, grungy, and according to the Far Cry fella, quirky? It's a muddled mess. The Zelda graphics tell you that the aesthetic will be something light and cheery.

Rayman screenshot gets it. You should cut out the brown and muddy shit screenies and just compare the Zelda one to the Rayman one.

Because I would agree with you if you said Rayman was more deserving and didn't mention all of the "OMG REALISM IS BROWN" games.

I wonder if this is a troll thing because Rage looks so generic.
I am no fanboy, but I guess I like colourful aesthetics.

I think Zelda SS looks very pretty.

It is supposed to take a lot of inspiration from impressionest art and the like.

It is simply more pleasing to the eye.

Umm... the award is for best graphics, therefore polygon count and pixel count are huge factors in determining the winner. Zelda SS isn't even in HD, which should technically eliminate it. The only reason that it's even nominated is because it's Zelda. Seriously, that screenshot could almost pass for a GameCube game.

For everyone who thinks it looks better; you're probably right. So Zelda SS should win the award for best artwork or something like that. Graphics award is for technical achievement, not artistic style.

Nice to see that Battlefield 3 won. Frostbite 2 looks insanely good. I'm going to need a massive GPU upgrade to make that kind of good stuff.

In Zelda, the light is omnipresent. It doesn't seem to come from anywhere, it comes from everywhere. It's actually too bright, which is a nice contrast from Rage, all brown and crap, but doesn't hold a candle to the nearly photo realistic Farcry 3, which is pretty bright and vibrant too.

In a sheer graphics department, nothing beats Farcry. But for a unique aesthetic, nothing beats Rayman, but they lose a lot because it's a 2D game and atmosphere is a lot easier to create.

I'm passing judgement on all of those game with only seeing one screenshot (as I don't care for Far Cry or Rage either).

I'm passing judgement on them based on screenshots (which was clarified as you mentioned). If you feel that I'm wrong, I'll gladly welcome more screenshots to look at (if you post them), but I won't waste my time so I can form an opinion that someone else believes is more valid because I've watched a trailer (no offense, as you have every right to find my opinion invalid because I haven't seen a trailer, but I have every right to form an opinion on something without validating with someone else).

Sorry if this comes off snippy. I tried to edit it so I don't sound like a jackass. xD
