I guess Nintendo's not the only big bad corporation shutting down fan games this year. The free roguelike DoomRL has been served a cease and desist notice by Zenimax;

The real kicker is that the game predates Zenimax's acquisition of id Software by six years.
It's odd that Zenimax has gone all sue-crazy over DoomRL when so many other projects have been either ignored or given their blessing. Hell, Brutal DOOM 64 was recently honored at the Video Game Awards. There's speculation that it may have something to do with the creator pitching a game on Kickstarter called Jupiter Hell. While the proposed game is its own unique IP, the fact that it's a spiritual successor with money involved (albeit tangentially) may be the reason. Still a dick move, if you ask me.
DoomRL is still available for download as of this writing, though it probably won't be for much longer (at least via the official website).
