Zombie rpg's are generally games like Dead Frontier and Die2Night, played by a niche group of people who can stand the Top Down perspective and limited actions per day ideal (each game respectively). Perhaps I'm being too harsh, but these come to mind as the prominent RPGesque zombie games of today, browser based.
Whenever I see a AAA game studio come out with a Zombie game that ISN'T Valve, its always a hack n slasher, kill as many zombies as possible in a horribly outlandish way to get points while finishing objectives or somesuch. The most serious looking zombie game as of recent that I can say doesn't seem to be working in this way is Dead Island, which won't be out for a while but promises to be more survival oriented than run n gun.
Speaking of Dead Island, seeing it gave me hope for the Zombie survival rpg, but also reminded me that "RPG" has lost its meaning to being games about magic and medieval scenarios with goblins n what not (Perhaps, again, I am being too harsh). I am hard pressed to find an RPG outside of those scenarios where you can build a character and still wield modern and interesting weaponry, up to and including a good ol' .45.
Zday is one of the games that I stumbled across in my search for more RPG oriented Zombie games, it is in development by a small group (4-6 people from what I've gathered) of people that make it in their spare time, from scratch mind you. They've already jumped one engine in favor for another, but their progress is cause for hope for those that follow them. Seeing their struggle, I am again reminded at the lack of interest in the Zombie RPG idea. Their idea is to make an MMORPGFPS, a great idea in a zombie setting, not fully realised in the limited views available to us, at least in my opinion (Sorry Dead Frontier, I can't stand top down... even though I love the Fallout series).
What I would like to get peoples opinions on, is whether or not the Zombie MMORPG(fps) idea is worth persuing, and if so, why have there been so few examples of it?
(Please excuse me if my post is incoherent, I am not great at idea threading)
