Who from id would’ve thought at the time that the game made under what’s arguably their most turbulent development cycle would have such a long lasting and reverenced legacy.

Man, all this talk of Quake has given me such a hankering. And I don't mean just because of the enhanced release. Feels like these last couple years a lot of people have rediscovered this game, after what seemed like the longest time of being mostly forgotten about, overschadowed by its more popular descendant Quake III and the various Dooms. It's kind of nice to see it gets its dues as arguably the single most seminal fps save for Doom.

Scew it, I'll be fragging tonight.

Yeah...sign me up in the category of "person who likes the idea of Quake (Lovecraftian lore) but doesn't actually enjoy Quake, though would like to see Quake be given the Doom Eternal treatment."

Was tempted by the remaster as the price is inoffensive enough, but mostly cause anything with the words "Trent Reznor Soundtrack" engages the impulsive purchase tendencies lurking beneath theses tattered grey folds of failure. Got no idea if it's worth playing these days though.

Depends on what you tolerance for early-mid 90's fps design is, i.e. key hunting in sort of maze-like levels full of monster closets it likes to spring on you. It still controls and plays really well tho. Very smooth and responsive.

That's said, I am super biased because Quake gave me the best game mechanic of all time.

Rocket jumping?
Yeh, rocket jumping. Played a bit last night, saw a ledge and thought to myself "I could jump up there". And lo, I did and it worked exactly as I remember, and it was glorious.

EDIT: fuck the slimes tho.

I really enjoy Quake, no other FPS is really like it. With the odd combination of future and dark gothic, plus most of the enemies are pretty tough, requiring you to have an extended engagement with them to put them down. Most fps games have a few tough enemies with a lot of cannon fodder, you generally only encounter cannon fodder in quake in the first stage of an episode.
