The FBI on Tuesday raided the offices of a New York City police union in Manhattan.

In addition to executing a search warrant at the headquarters of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, an FBI spokesperson said the bureau was also searching a home in the Long Island suburb of Port Washington.

That home belongs to the SBA's outspoken leader, Ed Mullins, sources told NBC News.

It was not immediately clear why the FBI targeted the SBA, which represents 13,000 members of the New York City Police Department and is the fifth-biggest police union in the country.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was aware of the FBI raid but provided no details.

Mullins, who has run the union since 2002, could not immediately be reached for comment. But he has frequently clashed with both the NYPD leadership and De Blasio.

The union leader's acerbic twitter posts have included calling a city councilman a “first class whore”, calling a former health commissioner a “b----”, and in response to the officer involved shooting death of Michael Brown and subsequent protests he said, “Ferguson Missouri was a lie and a nation of police have been under attack ever since.”

Could be also related to recent leaks from Epik and/or Jan 6th, for if he's comfortable saying those things publicly, one can only imagine the spicy takes and tassels he indulges in when safe behind the shield of anonymity with like-minded company.

The NYPD is bigger than some militaries. It's basically a union for the first rank of managers

All unions are for protection. Workers need protection because those that oppose them are well armed. Police Sergeants need protection because the people they brutalize outnumber them.
I mean specifically sergeants. Do all police ranks have their own union or something? A lieutenant union for example?

Why do police sergeants specifically need a union?
They probably don't.

But it creates a means for some people to make themselves feel useful / special / important / notable. Society is full of organisations that probably don't need to exist, but provide an outlet for self-important (often self-appointed) people to make it easier to give themselves status and backing to make people listen to them more.

Really successful ones can become very powerful. I recall one group in the UK which was just some guys who made their own organisation, and with enough hard work managed to assert themselves as de facto spokespeople for their community. That's pretty impressive - and slightly alarming - given they had no clear mandate from that community whatsoever.

Oh, one could mention all sorts of groups that could broadly fit that description.
