Covid-meme will either die down after the elections in the US or stay around for a couple of years (another year, then) like SARS. The pump is terrible, the shut-down is terrible, this whole situation is a nightmare akin to living under the CCP. I wouldn't be surprised if digital wallets are around the fucking corner, coupled with a credit system.
Yeah, it's not fun. But I have two parents and two parents-in-law, plus other family, friends and colleagues with a high chance of death if they get covid-19. All in all, I prefer them alive to not having a few months of recession.

My dad got the flu, he told me it was scary af. He said it was worse than the time he broke his ribs, it was that hard for him to breath. We were afraid he would be put under, but he was lucky he wasn't a severe patient.
Look at the stats for deaths from this. It's around 75-80. My grandparents are dead so I'm biased here.
US is hit hard because it's so FAT, obese people get worse treatment and are more prone to complications stemming from their sheer size.

The UK will almost certainly not end up an American colonial possession simply because the maths don't stack up. Absent some form of disaster, the closeness of the EU for both trade and geopolitical concerns will always exceed that of the US by a substantial margin, and the UK will return to the arms of Europe in some way, irrespective of this most recent post-imperial convulsion.
You must admit though that that would be hilarious.

Edit: Edit: (I've spent too much time on this, but to hell with it.)

Even with widespread containment measures, and even without being one of the worst-hit areas, covid-19 filled the all local hospitals to capacity. Thousands of non-critical medical operations were put back weeks or months, with resultant suffering. Had it overspilled, it would also have ended up with people needing critical care from reasons other than covid-19 no free facilities, ending in unnecessary non-covid deaths too.

This was not the flu.

Sort of, but that "the 51st state" joke is sufficiently old that it's covered with a thick layer of dust and cobwebs.

Considering I expect that social security will be dead before my generation gets to use it, FUCK IT, let it die faster. The baby boomers got us into this mess, they can finally be the ones over a barrel for a change.

At least if it's dead by 2023 I won't have to pay into it anymore knowing that I'll never reap the benefits.
Millions of Americans will die if we lose social security. It is all that allows the lower and middle class to survive at all as they have no savings to fall back on. You say let it die now, but often the 401k gets taken out early when people fall into that mid life gap between 50 and retirement and they either withdraw it or not survive. MANY employers are letting people 50+ go to avoid paying their retirement packages and increased healthcare expenses as they age. Many employers are also screening out applicants 50+ so they are unable to find more work at all. This forces people to live off their 401k's until their social security kicks in. It is literally all they have that is preventing a major poverty catastrophe on an unimaginable scale.
This year, 37% of Gen Xers reported having less than $5,000 in emergency savings, and 30% said they had borrowed against their employer retirement accounts or taken hardship withdrawals or early withdrawals from them. These statistics seem to hint at severe, mid-life financial strains.3
the average Millennial has 34% less family wealth than this same age cohort in previous generations. ... “The two economic busts left the Millennial generation uncertain about their own financial futures,”
Gen x
Millenians
The reality is without it much of the population will literally have nothing to survive on at all. One of the quickest ways to let the current bad situation turn into some apocalyptic poverty mess with the elderly and disabled dying in mass in the streets is to end social security. Has to be one of the worst ideas I have heard all day, and I have heard some pretty terrible ideas from the GOP already.

While I agree that the US Obesity problem is making this much worse, we need to remember that is not the only factor that determines whether or not someone gets severely ill. People often get a false sense of security and think they are immune, and then find out otherwise in the worst way possible. My 140lb brother continued to work during the Pandemic and did not realize his own risk and now he has been hospitalized with COVID-19 since the beginning of August and although he is out of ICU now, he is going to have permanent lung damage for the rest of his life. We still have people all across the US getting severely ill and dying that do not fit the average statistic, so everyone should really still use a great deal of caution just as if they are because you never know if you are going to be one of the ones who do get very sick or not until it actually happens.

None of these people fit the average statistic either:

This goes on and on...There have just been so many and we will have many more if people do not take proper precautions seriously. People getting the wrong idea about whether or not it is dangerous to them just causes us to lose more that we should not have in the prime of their lives.

It's viral pneumonia, whatever.
Stuff breaks, people die. My dad almost went under and got a breathing tube stuck up his face, half of the people that go that far don't ever wake up. We can't fix this, and putting on masks doesn't change that. A vaccine won't work, it's just something that was BOUND to happen, professionals in the field had been talking about the next big plague for over a decade now, anticipating it a hundred years after the Spanish flu. We're not much better than our ancestors during the black death.

I strongly disagree about vaccines. I have had the flu almost kill me repeatedly in the past. When I started getting my flu vaccine every year, even when I have contracted the flu, it is always much more mild than it had been otherwise. I will be getting my COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available as well because it really IS that important for us to do. Pretending like we cannot do anything and viewing it as hopeless only ensures we lose more that could have been saved in the meantime.

Sorry that happened, man. Been doing everything in my power to prevent it from happening to my parents. Masks help.

But I'll readily admit that the current ones just sort of lack in the aesthetics.

I'll admit to not having enough of an understanding about Social Security that I won't speak of it like I do.

However, the Trump Affect is what interests me the most now.

Once again, Trump does and/or proposes something stupid or straight up breaks his promises (such as ot touching Social Security). Once again, instead of focusing on his continued betrayal, we spend time arguing about the legitimacy of Social Security, why it doesn't matter to us, or whatever.

What is it about this man that the majority of the world has a blind spot for every misdeed he does? Why is he always excused while the rest of us must bare the weight of all our misgivings?

Social security is going to die at some point. It's on a slow march there, and I don't see it lasting another 40 years.

When it dies that suffering is going to happen regardless, so I'm in favor of it happening sooner, where it may end up being beneficial to millenials in the long run who are being screwed by having to pay into supporting the baby boomers in a system they'll likely never see the benefits of themselves.

Also boohoo, the 50+ year olds aren't getting their retirement packages? Most millenials don't have jobs that include a retirement package of any kind. Only 30% of millennials contribute to a 401k, and way fewer have employment with some kind of pension.

Again, if this is going to mostly harm the baby boomers I'm ok with it.

First of all, it is too late to " hurt the baby boomers" as they are already in retirement, so if your motivation is revenge, that isn't going to happen. IT will however, completely destroy the millennials, generation X , and Zoomers. As I linked above, I already pointed out that Gen x and Millennials have no savings or any ability to save. The extreme poverty and people dying in the streets I was referring to WAS the millennial and Gen X, the baby boomers are already collecting their $2k a month from social security and are fine. Generation X was harmed by the baby boomers actions as much as millennials are, just millenilas have just a little bit more time to do something about it. Gen X is just going to be crushed regardless because they were denied the ability to save + the ability to own a home by the baby boomers in addition to the time needed to prepare.

Baby Boomers 1946 and 1964 = Already receiving social security and are fine.
Generation X 1965 and 1980 = Completely screwed
Millennials 1981–1996 =Completely Screwed
Zoomers 1996- =Completely Screwed

We are just hurting all the people the Baby Boomers already hurt even worse by letting it fail because Gen X and Millennials have ALREADY been paying in their entire lives thus far and then the government will still legally owe them the money but will not have it to pay them when they are owed. Currently, it is all the savings Gen X and Millenials even have right now at all.

It won't. There will be a knock-on effect. Besides the demographic issues devils described, consider the result of a bunch of boomers and gen-x suddenly homeless because they can no longer afford rent. And that's just the start.

That's great that you came into terms with sweet embrace of Death, and its inevitability. I see you already made up your mind and there's no point in trying to convince you otherwise. I can respect that choice, when it comes to responsibility for personal health.

However, some of us aren't hurrying up to jump into coffin yet and would rather atleast try to find solutions, instead keeling over and dying.
I repeat, from me, personal choice where it doesn't negatively affect others, is fine. Obstructionism and purposefully endangering others, isn't.

Because he's a rich white man.
Not about Trump, but could be applied as well

Opinions are only as good as what you back them up with. You make them public, people will react to them. And if that reaction is disagreement and pushback, you better have a thick enough skin to handle it.

That aside...

Not about Trump, but could be applied as well

Perfect. I'm counting down the days before Musk announces he's working on special cybernetic augments that will something something and therefor we won't need social safety nets anymore.
