This was after another Australian journalist was disappeared by the Chinese government... in mid August. Leaving some questions around why Australian federal police waited two weeks before brining back the other journalists.
Late last week, a rumour was leaked that this 'disappearing' was a retaliation for the AFP raiding Chinese journalists in Australia and taking documents. In June. The AFP quickly point out that this is not as bad as disappearing people, but I point out that this is not really 'Freedom of the Press'y. Yes, one is worse, but the other is not good. AFP have claimed these Chinese journalists are spies... with the normal no evidence to back up their claim.
This is not the first time this particular Australian government has not upheld Freedom of the Press ideals. Last year, Australian journalists had their workplaces raided over 'sensitive information leaks' from the government. Most Aussie government uphold Freedom of the Press but apparently not this one.
There has been some blowback with Australia calling the international community to investigate incidents in Wuhan (rather than Trump saying he will do something about Wuhan and then literally do nothing.) China has stopped buying some products from here. Some other Chinese journalists have also been out at minister briefings but not taking video of the minister - they've been taking video of the Australian journalists... which seems weird.
So, China does a pretty bad thing but Australia has done some less bad things.
