Morals schmorals, we’re all fucked because she didn’t retire six years ago. The courts are political. Period. The founders were idiots for thinking that was avoidable. Should’ve had an elected Supreme Court.
No.

Sorry, I don't buy that. I'm a progressive because of my morals, not in spite of them. If I wanted something that benefitted me, I'm a light skinned black guy that cleans up nice. I'd be a perfect youtube figurehead that spouts some crap I don't believe in to reap in the monetary benefits.

LGBTQ+ doesn't affect me because I'm straight. Women don't affect me because I'm a guy. The politics of the poor and downtrodden don't affect me because I'm neither of those.

But I'm a Progressive because my morals tell me that People Matter Always. Always. I understand everything you're saying about Ginsburg. But we were fucked when Hillary didn't campaign where she felt it was a lock. We were screwed when the Republicans picked Trump. We were screwed when Comey 'decided' to open up an investigation in Hillary weeks before the election.

There's a rabbit hole of fuckery that we're dealing with. And I still feel that Humans over Politics must rule the day. It's the same reason that even though Trump's response killed my family members, I don't ever wish he would get it because I don't want people to suffer or die for my perceived gain.

That will not waver.

2. Members of the establishment of either major party will do what is in their best interest in getting re elected. What would you think their best option now? Suppose using pure power, they can ram a conservative activist onto the USSC? I think that would make the radical Christian right happy but tick everyone else off. Fail to do so, they may lose this fringe, which can make the difference on getting elected or not.
What would you advise they do?
I think that if they make an argument that ramming a conservative judge into the position will result in defending those four the republican voters will accept it. I do believe that there is a republican fringe, but those should already have given out. Honestly, how many voters are going "yeah, he might have violated oaths of office and abused his powers several times, but this time it is serious".
But then again, if I was a republican advisor I would suggest marketing it from the perspective of democrat obstruction during the last 2 years and pressing the narrative that the only reason they couldn't get rid of "Obamacare"(has to be that phrase, medicare is generally accepted as being okay) was because the justices was too left leaning. And that if democrats would abuse their powers if they manage to win in the couple of decades so it is important to pre-stack the court.

Morals are weak, solidarity is power. I stand by the oppressed that I might not be oppressed. First they came for so and so, etc. Appealing to morals alone is a weakness, because while one’s enemies may have them, they will almost always choose their own benefit before giving themselves up to their enemies for their morals. Ideals are meaningless. All we have is cold reality. Call it what you may, but that’s all there is.

To be fair, he waited a whole, like, hour. That’s a lot for him.
According to the NPR article it was stage IV pancreatic cancer and considering her and her office had been radio silent, I'd be willing to bet they ruled it terminal when she was in the hospital in July and she'd been on hospice care since. Month or two is about what you can expect after that diagnosis, so the timeline fits as far as I can tell. SCTOUS justices are the level of people that get regular health updates and reports sent around to the other branches' leadership, so I'd bet cash money McConnell's known about this for at least a month and a half.

Which makes his waiting until Ginsburg died a mark of incredible patience. Flip side is, folks might've wondered why and how Trump's SCOTUS list got leaked last week? Well, now ya know!

So McConnell has his thumb up his arse for 6 months on a new relief deal but within a matter of hours he is preparing a vote for a new Supreme Court Justice. Fk this dude. Fortunately there are already a few GOP senators saying they will oppose the vote.

Oaths? Truths? None of that matters in hellzone baybee!
Where I'm from there is a rich traditions of oathbreakers being either put to death or being made into exiles. And besides, two month or so ago our prime minister was almost forced to leave her job because there was doubt as to who had originally advised her to declare a lockdown. And that doubt was over in a day and a half. Compare that to the US and discover a difference of values.

If I were Mitch McConnell and forcing a judge through would mean that the GOP loses the house and the senate and the presidency for the next six elections, I would take that trade in a heartbeat. Supreme Court justices go for a *long* time

I think McConnell might realize that if he pulls this off there won’t be anymore elections

No see, it's fair that some people's votes count for so much more than other people's based on where they live because

This is honestly the first phase of the hellzone I was totally emotionally prepared for. It’s almost funny for me because at least it’s as mundane as a woman dying from her third bout with cancer after months of notice. The tragedy is entirely found in the ruin of a thing I never much believed in, the American system of government. Yes, the consequences are dreadful, but given how inevitable something like this occurring has been for decades, I have a hard time getting genuinely upset.

You see, every time I think that I remind myself of self-assured, coastal NIMBY, liberals who think the electoral college and Senate should be abolished so blue states get all the power, and all their "opinions" on agriculture policy that make Lysenkoism look the epitome of competence by comparison.

The kind of absolute moron who thinks vertical hydroponics is the future of agriculture, not realizing hydroponics solution is literally one of the more environmentally-hazardous waste byproducts that can be and is handled in agriculture. People in agriculture handle high explosives, diluted nerve gasses, and raw fucking sewage, none of which can compare to the destructive potential of improperly-handled hydro solution. And these people are too damn convinced of their own political omniscience to ever listen to anyone who's seen a cow in person.

Practically everything west of the Rockies is on fire right now, and most of that isn't actually attributable to "climate change" regardless how much they want to whine about it. To what it's attributable is overpopulation, corporate yuppie morons having to be "hip" and "cool" pushing human habitation into biomes where fire is a vital and critical part of the ecology, and these same morons then protesting against necessary and proper fire prevention policy because firebreaks and controlled burns inconvenience them personally.

You think how Trump's handled coronavirus is bad, wait to see what happens if some dipshit like Cuomo who can't even sort out keeping dependent elderly homed and safe from the pandemic in one state, gets in charge of national agriculture and food policy with zero realistic check or balance. An American Holodomor is what you'll get inside a decade, as if Obama's dumbfuck, Wall Street-jerkin', "do the bare minimum but go to great effort to make it appear as if you did something" vestigial policies haven't already damned the country to one inside a decade already by way of zeroing out US strategic food reserves.

There is a time for morals etc. But in this case all that's really being talked about amounts to decorum. It's not as if it's some guiding principle we are discarding or exchanging, it is a matter of practicality. Who's even hurt by us considering things from a practical point of view here on this forum? It's not like her family is sitting here in rapt attention to what we say and regardless of her being a person what we're worried about is also the political position she was in and the effects of it

Last bit sounds like absolute hyperbole. No I don't believe Cuomo or just about anyone who'd ever get to be President is likely to be worse than Trump at handling disasters. Most people probably wouldn't have to have their experts fight them nearly as much or be so blatantly about propaganda over substance

And if I were the Democrats facing winning the Senate and presidency after Trump placed another very right wing Supreme Court justice to replace RBG, the first thing I'd be doing is drawing up plans to appoint the two most liberal justices I could find, increasing the size of SCOTUS to 11 (it's only 9 by convention). Aged ~50 or under, so they'll be there decades. Alternatively and slightly more cruelly, just impeach a conservative justice. For instance bring up the sexual assault / harassment charges against Kavanaugh or Thomas, and who gives a shit what the evidential standard is: Congress are judge and jury and final word. Then appoint an appropriate liberal justice.

Let it be known to the Republicans that if politics is to be an utterly honourless, brutal, knife fight, the Democrats are bringing their sharpest blade.

The democrats are too spinless for that and have proven time and time again that their sharpest blade is a butterknife.
