Could it be that the democrats "Underperformed" because the vast majority of people are either self-centered or will vote against their best interests due misplaced loyalty?
The Democrats in many ways do well enough.

The Democrats have won the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections. It is perhaps unlucky that the distribution of Democrats and Republicans in the states favours the Republicans equivalent to about 2% vote share. And that major voter groups where the Democrats tend to have high support are less likely to vote.

Also, I think a lot of this is about swinging communities, not individuals. Who is more convincing? A politician, or a person's family and friends? Perhaps someone thinks a politician sounds convincing, but when they dare say so and everyone they know squashes it, perhaps they quail. Reaching out to people perhaps is harder these days, as the media has fractured into an ever greater number of outlets that more effectively function as echo chambers and lock people into their beliefs.

In relation to this, also parties have to stitch various communities and demographics into a bigger whole. And here too maybe the Democrats' job is relatively hard, because it potentially has more heterogeneity in supporters, so it necessarily must split its efforts more across those communities, thereby weakening its message.

I predict that day 1 he won't say it was sunny when it was raining and day 2 wont say he had the largest crowd size in history. If we can just start on that note I'll be good
You forgot the most important fact. 3. When people pointed this out, Trump called them liars. And people were okay with this

Didn't they?

Hillary was an unpopular candidate: she comes across as cold and cynical, plus the perception of arrogant, "woke", east coast intellectual and, well, being a woman. Biden is likeable - more down to earth, friendly, sometimes a bit of a doofus in a way that lots of Americans will think makes him a bit more like them. Sanders, as is often pointed out, is not likable.
Did we watch the same Biden? Likeable? Yeah, no thanks. That is one of the Hottest Takes I've seen in a while

Edit: I'm still considering Tony Abbott as more likeable and I detest him. Even Bojo and May are more likeable than. Biden probably won due to Corona, not his likeablity

Yes, likeable. Someone an average American could easily imagine sitting down in a bar with and having a good conversation about things the average American is interested in, who is friendly and cares.

As opposed to some sort of intellectual elite, who goes to the opera and not the football, prefers an expensive Chablis to a beer, and would spend the whole time staring down their nose at the uncultured prole in front of them, wishing they could be somewhere else.

Yeah I never understood the Republican desire to be dominated and basically cuckolded against reality. I mean Trump was in Pennsylvania just a few weeks ago telling them he didn't want to be here, he never planned to come here and his life was great having never been here before. And they LOVED it. They cheered for him like he was on stage groping their daughters. He hates them, tells them that and they're like "Oh please Donny, spit on us and call us scum!"

Have you ever seen those 1950s "educational" films where a disembodied, authoritative male voice tells everyone how to live, work and even enjoy themselves, with the implied threat of societal disapproval practically being equal to being thrown out of the tribe? It seems like a lot of people grew up on those, and just can't handle a world that doesn't tell them (and everyone else) exactly what to do and when.

I have, mostly on MST3K, but I take your meaning. But I do wonder why they're so happy with being mocked. Like its one thing to want an authoritative figure telling you what to do - Churches exist for that very reason. There's a sense of easing pressure on yourself if someone else is in charge.
But these authoritative figures HATE them. Its an abusive relationship, and rather than the standard 'Oh its not bad, I can change him" bullshit of abuse victims its "Thank you sir, may I have another!" of a sub in a BDSM relationship.

I can do without either. I literally couldn't care if they were drinking beer or wine. I'm drinking my own drink. Tall about Opera or Football all you want. I find them equally interesting. I think both of these peoplr have a very low opinion of the working class

And I think you have a very narrow view of what American is. You've been listening to too many ads about Americans. It's made up propaganda

Edit: This sounds way too much like Identity Poltics

It's not a narrow view of what an American is; it's a pretty accurate view of how a member of the public views a politician.

It comes up endlessly. When people are asked by analysts, pollsters, or interviewers what they think about Politician A, B or C, the most common response is to do with whether they seem like a "regular guy" or whether they're "down-to-earth", or whether they could imagine having a pint with them.

It's vacuous, it's irrelevant to somebody's politics, it's a ridiculous distraction. But people are really easily swayed by image. How else could anyone conclude that a dismissive, aloof, rich asshole like Nigel Farrage is a "man-of-the-people"? He always makes sure he gets photographed with a pint down the pub.

I’m talking about the football. Like talking about Football (Or sport in general) is the only thing you talk about in a pub.

We call it the pub test. I’m just not limiting it football. If you want to talk to me about Opera, it’s fine. You want to drink a wine instead of a beer, it’s no skin off my nose.

Why would you limit this to beer and football only?

What are you guys gonna do when sport keep drying up, like it is every where? Force people to talk about sports because it’s so American? In 20 year it probably isn’t

I wouldn't limit it to anything; I try not to let this superficial guff affect who I vote for. But we know it affects how a lot of people think of politicians, because they bring it up all the time.

I'm with Agema. Likeable. For the first time in a long time, I heard a President speak and I felt intelligence coming from the words. The attempts of comforting and togetherness. I was literally confused about this feeling of not completely experiencing rage the second I heard my President speak.

It has been that long.

And that's how we ended up with Bush Jr. as President. The Connecticut-born, Harvard-educated elite put on a cowboy hat and faked a Texas twang, and he passed the "I could have a beer with that guy" test with enough idiots to get elected.

I was going to point out that Farage’s photo opportunity is just that, PR. He’s not doing it for the people at all. If we don’t be too careful, having a pint is going to be the next elitist thing. Fortunately, other elitist keep having a pint from being from being elitist

Biden only look good compared to Trump. And Bush and Hillary.

Like, I’ve had to spend some time convincing my partner to be interested in Biden because of his obvious deficits. And she hates Trump. Similar things at my work. Sure this is anecdotal and not the US but it should be easier to like him than this.

That's exactly what it is-- PR. And PR works.
