Its been a long time, and I really hate the 'high-schooler chosen one' trope in Anime, but wasn't the whole point of Evangelion that everyone was horrible, everything they did was bad, kids shouldn't be soldiers, and no one is a good person? Its kinda like finding a Husbando from the Chaos Marine Legions. No one is a good choice.

I mean, I know she kinda has that whole thing where she can't seem to distinguish parental love from sexual love due to her daddy issues, but you know... nobody's perfect.

And Asuka and Rei are great and all, but I think I'd rather jump into an active volcano than deal with those two.
Honestly for all her hype I don’t feel Mari brought much to the table in Rebuild that either Asuka or Rei couldn’t have done.
They wanted to sell figurines.

Yes, it was a deconstruction of mecha and shounen anime tropes in general. Most of the characters have lots of issues and are dysfunctional in general. It was made by a guy dealing with lots of depression.

Not that it isn't interesting to read up on what Anno was thinking about during the whole process, but I'm not going to take everything he says about it as gospel and not have my own way of looking at it, which is what I feel some people can get very accusatory about. 'You're not allowed to see depth or artistic value there stupid, Anno clearly said it meant nothing and he hates you.'

I watched End of Evangelion without knowing all the drama and fan blacklash that was happening, and I can't say I was left confused because of it. I still enjoyed it, as much as one can enjoy something so cynical. And when I finally did become aware of the supposed motivation in making in it didn't really add aything other than some interesting trivia - it didn't suddenly transform the movie into something completely different for me.

Asuka is legitimately a character about whom I can think of absolutely zero redeeming qualities. She's a selfish, hateful, abusive, rude, snotty, smug, arrogant, self-centered, unlikeable, violent dickhead and attention whore. I just rewatched the series and EoE this year for a movie club I have, and came out more determined than ever in my assessment that:
  1. The series is a colossal, maddeningly overrated incoherent mess that contradicts itself at nearly every turn, ending up saying nothing about anything at all.
  2. The reboots are even worse, and the only thing worse than them is the mental gymnastics their defenders will go to defend them
  3. The manga adaptation is the only version of Evangelion worth anyone's time. Because at least it has a modicum of respect for the viewer, not to mention good taste, humanity, character progression, consistent tone, actual weight of consequences and, you know, actually being good.
Oh, and fuck this "best girl" shit, even as a joke. Yuck.

You contradict yourself in the first paragraph.
If you consider all those redeeming qualities, that says a lot about you. Then you and Asuka are match made in hell. So giving her personality, I highly doubt she want to do anything with you. for the record, I'm talking about your 14-year-old self. Whatever age you are right now, she wouldn't want to deal with you either.

Bennett already described the best things about and so eloquently put.

ITT: Escapists crying over the anime that criticizes escapism.

Truly the last intelligent bastion of the internet.
What point is this statement meant to convey? I'm legitimately lost.

I have faith that you're intelligent enough to get a simple point. You'll get it eventually, I'm sure.
Am I being punked? Is this like that "we should improve society somewhat" meme? "Ooh, you say you don't like a show that criticizes escapism, yet you say so on a website called Escapist? Curious, I am very intelligent" Like, yeah. And then? I can say something like "Oh, you criticize white people, but your country's led from a building called the White House. How odd."

No, it isn't. Try again. Here's a hint: Escapists does not in this case denote a person that visits the Escapist, but rather someone that indulges in escapism to a larger degree than is healthy.

Just because I enjoy torturing myself from time to time: how did you establish people in this thread to engage in escapism to an unhealthy degree?
