It's funny, no idea if it's true or not, but I heard that "Freespace 2" was one of the big reasons the space-sim genre died out. Apparently it was so good that other developers were like "yep, no way we can compete with that, not even gonna try".
FS2 is a good choice. Hopefully Star Citizen...

Freespace 2. Love the game and it had great reviews but sold abysmally. Lost of mods but no sequel. Still hoping for a sequel or reboot but the space sim genre is not what it was.
I enjoyed it when I first got it, maybe 2002 (on a 1998 computer). It has aged, especially in game play. The puzzles are weak and the platforming is a pain in the ass and don't get me started on the cliffhanger ending! :( . That said it has nice artistic touches in the zen level and playing with...
Be interesting to see a film adaption of a game with a complex plot and detailed back story, in contrast to say Hitman or Mortal Combat. That said the whole collectible tapes thing is good for computer game story telling but I am not sure it would work for a film unless you are willing to put up...
The "generic grizzled macho emotional spectrum" is very insightful. When I think about it most characters could be put on it. For example:
1. Grayson Hunt (bullet storm) is smug,
2. Alcatraz (Crysis 2) has the silent contempt
3. Tommy Vercetti (GTA VC) is angry all the time.
