Please give a try to Azumanga Daioh. It's not really the "Classic" animes people refer to but is really funny. Yes it is about high school girls but this was made way before the "Moe" shitstorm of anime overwhelmed the so called "Slice of Life" genres. This one is less about cutesy girls...
