I recently finished the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud which was a lot better than I thought it was going to be at the start, I'd definitely recommend that. Alternatively, you could try: Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials, the Tunnels series... I would suggest Harry...
