I thought that the 'mystery' thing was resolved - at one point you come across a dead marine, I think in the secret metroidy bit, and say their name. I assumed that they were the traitor.

No, you cannot gift the game you already have. That offer was only on the Orange Box and the L4D & L4D2 four-packs. Any other pack you just don't get that game twice. Unless you only have it retail, in which case you would then have it tied to a Steam account, with Steam community features...
