I like that Greg referenced the "culture". I think it's worth noting that RP has a wink-nudge/secret-club appeal to certain people. Those people might not be nearly as enthusiastic about their hobby if roleplaying had mainstream acceptance. It's a catch 22 really. We'd love to have more...
