If you look at the design specs [http://www.pacificrimmovie.net/gallery] for the mechs, you'll see that they don't all require two people. Japan's only has one pilot, while China's actually requires three.

I decided to watch through the first two episodes. I could definitely see the appeal, and was happy to sit through the whole thing, but it just didn't grab me enough for me to want to watch any more. At this stage, I'm simply indifferent to it.
