This completely depends on the characters in question. What you've described is so broad that I couldn't possibly judge and, if that's your intent, I cannot state a preference. It depends entirely on the writing of the characters.

The series was never ironic. Just Hammy. It was deliberately over acted to the point of silliness. DMC 3 and DMC 4 were incredibly hammy, enjoyable so.
