As always I'd recommend Baldur's gate 2. It's an unoriginal suggestion for a reason.

Anno 1404 is a great trade based city building game it is also very pretty and has a sci-fi sequel out soon! Seriously, this game has eaten so much of my time, you have been warned.

Anno 1404 is one of my favourite games, very slow paced, very challenging but rewarding. You can turn off any of the conflict (its a bit of a distraction anyway), and focus on the trade and city building in the infinite game mode. Plus on a good P.C the game looks beautiful.

I did this as well worked like a charm. My uni wasn't rude or anything, they just saw it as out of their power.

I agree completely. I love the isometric POV, it allows for stunning scenery that doesn't cost the studio a ton of money. A touchscreen powered isometric RPG could work fantastically.
