I say it all the time but god damn it give me a Colony Wars 1 remake with a skirmish mode and i'l be the happiest person alive. The game had such atmosphere and deep story behind it all. Also the music is golden and bombastic and such a pleasure to listen too.

If you can get space empires 5 working you can build ring worlds and Dyson spheres. Though it has some serious compatibility issues with 64-bit OS's.

There is a lot, the most recent is Endless Space, which is easy to get your head around but a challenge to beat. Has a very nice UI and the empire engagement is easy. GalCiv 2 is more in the vein of Civ in space. Distant Words, haven't played it though. MoO 2 for some classic gaming.

I would love to board enemy cap ships and take them over, that would be brilliant. Also the space genre is getting plenty of love as of late and quite rightly. The genre has been neglected for too long now, it's time to bring it back to the forefront.
