I think that the Steam Workshop and the Skyrim Nexus are both good methods to download mods, each in their own different way. The Skyrim nexus may require some more time to download/install the mods you want, but it offers a lot more customization and navigation features than the Steam Workshop...

I usually don't play online multiplayer modes on games (or just online multiplayer games) so I don't really see many people online on games at all. Additionally, I'm usually lucky enough to end up in games/matches where people using mics is uncommon.
