I would have to say Gold. In my own opinion, it just sort of peaked there. Red/Blue/Yellow were alright, but SEVERELY flawed in battle mechanics. Gold/Silver/Crystal fixed several parts of that, and was able to successfully continue from the original series. Ruby/Sapphire, while perfectly good...

Well, at least they're going to actually FINISH the story, as opposed to just leaving us hanging. But beyond that, I think that this is a good call. The games, in all honesty, weren't that fun. The main reason I got them was for the entertaining story. Hopefully, it finishes up to be good!
