It's considered a demo flight because they have to perform all those extra maneuvers prior to rendezvous so that NASA, Roscosmos, et al. feel safe that it won't crash into the space station. Also, I don't think they put any irreplaceable cargo on board this flight, in case the berthing doesn't...
