Certainly in Icewind Dale 2, having a higher AC is better.
Rangers have various bonuses that fighters don't get - they get the ambidexterity and two-weapon fighting feats if in light or no armour, should be able to choose a preferred enemy to get bonuses to hit and damage against.

It's nice to change from playing a fragile army with lots of choice to a tough army with hardly any choice and vice versa.
