It's unjustified to PREVENT them, but morally justifiable in most cases to DETER them. Actually, good question. It may be, but there are so many different circumstances, I'm not sure how to answer. The question would have to be less ambiguous.

People seem to usually have a grand idea of going to costco/walmart/local supermarket for safety and provisions. I wonder how many people this plan would work for before most of them were boned.

Depends on what I'm currently doing. Covering the escape of refugees? No. But the council ship would be in orbit, (probably), so I could send up half the team in the Normandy. If they were still on the Citadel, I'd still split the team.

So many ambitions, I don't know where to start. I've gotten a degree in EMS and I'm a paramedic now, so hopefully working as one sometime soon. (After 8 months out of school, I finally have an interview that seems promising, for a job that pays well) I would like to get more experience...

That's a poor argument. However, even if that was necessary, there are plenty of games with heartrending moments. Because I'm sure they haven't been mentioned, Earthbound (Mother 2) and Mother 3 are great examples.

Cave Story. Great gameplay, great story, great challenge, and good replayability.
