Ok i'll give you a quick heads up, if you say X people are Y, thats racist. This is because you are generalizing on a race of people. Even if you qualify it by saying "a lot of x people", its still generalizing. Now if you're giving a specific example thats fine, but it doesn't tell us anything...

I think it is a colonial thing, at least a colonial british thing, as i can't talk for colonial spain. I've lived for multiple years in Britain, New Zealand and America, and am familiar with Australia and Canada. You see this in these countries as a way to distinguish them from each other...
