The thing is the human brain is hardwired to lock onto stuff to easily distinguish people, its a whole us and them thing. However what it locks onto is cultural dependent, for example in america people see race, in Britain, or at least this used to be the case and still is to some extent, people see class. The only thing we can do is acknowledge this thought process and contentiously oppose it. BTW i could really easily draw a class-ist view of Up!, but no-one does because people don't see class in this country. But i mean there were really serious concerns of sexism in Toy Story 3, and i don't think anyone is saying any of these interpretations are deliberate. Hollywood do seem have a hard time making rounded characters who are not white males, something i think is improving but doing so slowly.

Also that whole oppressed white person shtick which it seems more and more people are doing nowadays is fucking bullshit. I mean the reason is there is no WET(white entertainment television) or White History Month, is because white culture is the fucking default. I mean for example what would you watch on WET? Sitcoms about white suburban families? Dramas with predominantly white casts with token ethnicities filling the other roles? Congratulations you have created a channel identical to every other major fucking network out there. Morons.

I know i may have been responding to a troll there but i've heard to many people say that earnestly and i wanted to vent.

Are you white? Well of course you must be racist!!! Disney is a primarily white company, and every minority out there is going to do whatever they can to call it racist.

Im going to post one of the chain emails doing the rounds at the moment. You know the kind, the ones with some motivating message with a pretty good point behind it. I will post a copy of it I got here.

"Michael Richards makes his point...

Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld does make a good point. This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points... Someone finally said it.

How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman'... And that's OK... But when I call you, ******, Kike, Towel head, Sand-******, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or ***** .. You call me a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... So why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET... If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that? A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US .. Yet if there were 'White colleges', that would be a racist college. In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, car jack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

I am proud... But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists?? There is nothing improper about this e-mail.. Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on. I sadly don't think many will. That's why we have LOST most of OUR RIGHTS in this country. We won't stand up for ourselves! BE PROUD TO BE WHITE! It's not a crime YET... But getting very close!"

I had to apply the paragraphing as it comes as a wall of text.
But he makes a good point about the racism.

Reminds me of a court case a few years back where a british judge was quoted as having said:

"He can't be racist, hes Black,"

Awesome world we live in right?
And the most hilarious part of this is, it isnt even the non whites who pose the biggest threat to the caucasion freedoms and human rights, its other whites.

Stupidity is rife it would seem.
You sir, are amazingly true, thank you for bringing this quote to my attention.

Wow, looks like Renegade419 is a deluded moron. And (in case they see this and decide to play the racism card), I say that not because of skin colour, geographic origin, etc, I say that because he is clearly suffering from paranoia and a persecution complex, perhaps developed in order to shrug off negative criticism as some kind of ignorant discrimination. He could be black, white, brown, beige, blue, green, yellow, pink, purple, or even covered in stripes and it would not make him any more or less of an idiot.

This just reminds me of a group of likewise idiots who were claiming that Toy Story 3 was full of Illuminati and NWO (new world order) brainwashing. Someone needs to track these people down and offer them serious therapy (or a slap upside the head, depending on the circumstance and level of delusion). Sure, they'll probably say no, but at least we (and by 'we' I in no way wish to imply that I am part of any kind of peculiar secret society, before anyone reads too much into one word) tried.

Did you see that South Park episode where the boys wrote a really offensive book just for the hell of it and everyone took it to have all this deep meaning? As usual, South Park exaggerates a little here but it still makes a good point. It's something that always bothered me about studying English at school, how you can pretty much take any meaning you want out of anything. Maybe the writers are subconciously racist, maybe it's just a damn movie.
That's always an issue I've had in class. It makes me wonder, since most of the authors (if not all we study for symbolism) are dead, if we could ask them if they intended things this way, or they chose to just write a good novel.

And yes I did, I really enjoyed it.
ah this was the first thing that came to mind when i was reading it. damn you south park, your mockery of real life always finds a way into my head =\

symbolism has always pissed me off in english, not that i hate the idea in symbolism, i just fucking hate people like this, especially racist ones, who try so bloody hard to find deeper meaning and connections in things to the point that i can't take it anymore. im gonna go read something now to enjoy the complete face value of it and not think a damn about symbolism =]

Watch this film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNtbZf0JhmA

Then watch this film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbYXF5HmEds

Now see how similar the plot of these two films are to each other?

Light colored upper class, dark colored lower class, the ultimate bad guy is the one trying to unite the two, until he dies at the hands of those he has dedicated himself to helping?

The point is there are hundreds of ways to read any film, from racial perspectives, feminist, homosexual, theological, historical, social-political; the list goes on.

As for the inspiration behind this thread. He seems like a bit of a conspiracy loon. A guy who comes out with such phrases as "an old widower loses his wife to death" can't be too bright. Probably wants to use readings as these to prove his intellectual worth, unaware he is in fact doing the complete opposite.

See, I'm not a racist. (and I'm white, making me a racist by default. According to minorities in the area.)

No, really. I completely forget people's heritage because it doesn't have any impact on the respect I give them (sexuality too. I still give a high amount of respect to a girl who I found out is a lesbian yesterday.). So, the times that I say something that people take as racist, is when people are beiong overly sensitive.

I told a guy to, "shut up, or I'll kill you and hide the body in Mexico." (really, a joke.) He started getting the "offended deeply loook" on his face, with the pointing at himself. I went on to say, "What's wrong? I hide all my bodies in Mexico!" After about a minute, I said, "Oh, wait, fuck, you're a Mexican. This won't do. Well, you have San Francisco on your sweatshirt. I'll hide you in San Fran."

Basically, I said a joke that included Mexico. He took noffense because he thought I was attacking his Mexican-ness. I don't deliberately say or do racist things because I ignore race. Its when people take offense to something I say that has no eracist connotations to it that I become a racist.

By the way Pixar copied Doug from a Dexter's Lab episode. Right down to how he talks. That's the real issue.

If I want to find racist remarks from a movie, I will find them even they wouldn't really exist.

"He can't be racist, hes black."
So if black man or woman discriminates me for being white. That is not racism?
What if:
So if white man or woman discriminates me for being black. That is racism?

That dude who's said those quotes, clearly wants to start a fight, he wants to troll.
HE chooses to remain ignorant about basic ideas that run this world, he did not need to go to see that movie, I did not need to go and see that movie, I did not go and see that movie. He did not need to inspect the movie like that, he did not need to start a fight on youtube, just the truth that he started to whine on the forums takes some of hes credibility away, he might be chinese or slavia for all I know.

I think this falls in to the category of "There's always the one!"
If he got such a issue with Disney, go get a job there, or better make your own company and do movie with only black people who dscriminate whites, I don't care.
actually, and i know this is splitting hairs at this point, but pixar made UP, disney distributed
Well that sorta reinforces my point in a way. And publisher got quite big word on what they let go trough their sensors, they don't like something, it usually gets changed since options "Change this" or "Get a new publisher" are not really equal.

Oh please, not another idiot crying "persecution" whenever something rubs them the wrong way. By the way this guy writes he's probably a member of some racist group himself like the Black Panthers and has been brainwashed into seeing something that isn't there and getting offended at nothing.

It's not hard to draw parallels between something innocent and something offensive, I could easily link the movie Avatar to the Crusades or Finding Nemo to antisemitism. Hell, watch that painfully average movie 23 with Jim Carey to see how you can link everything together with numbers. It doesn't mean anything other than the severe paranoia and insecurities of a weak-minded person afraid of reality. Ignore them if you can, pity them if you can't.

Was watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GroDErHIM_0, enjoying the pleasantries of one of my favorite Pixar movies to date now, when I found fun comments of one "renegade419"

Yall got to be kidding me, This is the most racist movie and end of amerikkka plots ever made. And its a Award winning Best Picture....f*** outta here. Disney racist as f***.
Dug the Dog sees the white man Carl and says "Will you be my MASTER"....do i need to explain who Dug is? Throughout the film he keeps calling Carl "Master" do i really need to say who Dug represents? This nig*** Dug wants to leave his "Dogs" led by Alpha (a strong looking Dog w/ a Mike Tyson voice) and his old Master Muntz. Me being a black man u see why dat part really pisses me off, we are Dogs REALLY, calling you Master REALLY. F*** outta here I got more reasons why
what kind of meesage is what it sends to kids is what bothers me, all of our lives Disney movies made it seem like blk ppl didnt exsist until Princess & Frog when the black princess is a frog throughout the whole movie...yea rite. I got lil girls and i tell em about the bullshit Hollywood tries to put in our kids head.Ppl think im wrong now cuz i tell my lil girl aint no such thing as Santa Claus...so what...i'd give my kids the truth over a lie anyday...and this movie is joke.
"Zookeeper" Carl Fredrickson an old widower loses wife (eurocentric hold on N. amerikkka) to death. Frustrated w/urban development built around his home "the New Amerikkka" (Obama), refusing to sell his home he fights the construction worker and is forced to move out his home (foreclosure) put him in a home (white man losing his country drives him crazy), he had dreams w/ his wife to move to S. America (Paradise Falls...if i stayed in S.America i'd be offended)
start a new life, but a young Asian boy (Russell voiced by Japanesse actor Jordan Nagai) keeps knocking on his doors trying earn a merit badge "Assisting the Elderly" (China owning America, walks us across the street, makes all of our shit, got the money and power). Carl unleashes a bunch of ballons that lifts his house off the ground flies off w/ a "so long BOYS" to the black and hispanic nurses that was there to haul him off.
Getting away from it all Carl on his way to sit up high over S. America he feels free until guess who knocks at the door (Asia/china/N.korea) i mean Russell wants in. After disagreements and a thunderstorm (negiotiating ideas) they come to an agreement to work together once they reach Paradise Falls. There they meet a flightless bird (based on ppl of S.America) Russell names it Kevin (Kevin an Irish name means Kind Honest Handsome...PAUSE).
Tried to censor it the best I could, sorry if I missed parts.

I'm not one to be a big fan of symbolism. It's not that I don't like it and I do believe that somethings were ment to have them, but unless it's my job I like to take things like a good movie at face value and unless a symbol pops out at me I don't really look for it.

But I have seen this movie a few times...I saw hints of developmental change (an obvious one), the progression to better ones self (obviousish?), and resistance to change (very obvious)....but racism? It never really popped into my head.

What are your thoughts?

Just to add a bit more depth to this thread, what symbolism do you see in disney/pixar films you feel others might not see or agree with?
all of you are monumental cocks your reading to much into a KIDS MOVIE(yeah and youll probablly read to much into this as well
