Not sure if this is relevant, though from how you phrased your post it sounds as if you are only checking if the origin "application" starts when you start the game. Not checking if the origin "process" is running in the background.

You realize that the only reason they need money to keep the servers up, is that they force you to use their servers.... right?
[Edit] And one (not the only) reason they force you to use their servers is so that they can decide the lifespan of the game and shut the servers down just in time...

The servercosts for the game is included in the gameprice. From day of purchase to serverdown. Does it really matter who is using that already paidfor servertime? You the original purchaser, your kid brother (who by you definition should also pay the 9.99) or your neighbour who you sold the game...
