One of the things I find the most interesting about this article is the comment of how this has changed in the last 18 months. Wait, so smaller-scale or less expensively produced games were profitable before, but now they're not?
Clearly that's not the case, so I think the real issue here is...
Ok, here's what I think is wrong with this entire attempt at legislature, and it's not any of the other arguments I've heard discussed yet.
At the core of this entire law is the stated fact that video games ARE harmful in some way to young people. Otherwise, why would there need to be a law...
I'm glad some people in this thread have mentioned Stardock. They're a developer that doesn't tend to get a lot of publicity or notice, but they've been ahead of the curve on this for a long time. Here's a link to a blog post the head of the company wrote a few years ago...
Well, let's be honest about things. Very few Sci-Fi MMORPGs have been successful up to this point. The few still going are either very old ones that found a marginally lucrative market such as Anarchy Online, or are like EVE Online which offers a unique, if complicated, gaming universe. Neither...
Let's not forget the different gaming magazines out there as well as sites like this one that offer game reviews and information.
No matter how much money you blow on buying TV time to hype your game, you're still at the mercy of the reviews and comments of people that actually played the...
It's just the same old, same old again.
I remember reading how 'studies' conducted in the 1940's and early '50's showed that addiction to comic books lead to delinquent behavior and violence.
And a bit more recently how Dungeons and Dragons lead to addiction and deranged behavior and death...
I said it before and I'll say it again, all these schemes to deal with perceived loss of income for producers of video games seem to only punish the people that actually buy their games.
DRM for PG games? It doesn't work. Most so-called 'pirates' are people that didn't do much more then open...
I've been following this thread for a bit now and I have to admit that I can see the points you are trying to make, Hopeless Bastard. And it is a compelling argument.
I earlier posted a link to a page that talks about PC game piracy. I did this to make a point about how for a long time piracy...
I've been following this thread for a bit, and thought I'd share this article from a few years back. The writer is the head of Stardock, publisher of games like Galactic Civilizations II and Sins of a Solar Empire as well as running Impulse, a very good direct-download service that offers a lot...
