Regardless of whether or not you count the terminals as part of the story or not, they were, it still counts as an explanation, perhaps a poorly delivered one, but one none the less; and while I agree you shouldn't have to read a book to understand the story to game, you don't, it gives insight...

It could be that the Chief read the terminals in Halo 3, which, are supposed (never read them myself) to tell stories of the Didact and Librarian, and I'm sure there was something in the books about it, but I could be wrong.

I don't think most of us buy this, but I wouldn't put it beyond a lot of people. Considering how stupid people,(at least where I live in America), can be, I wouldn't be surprised if this was something that caught on; at least for a little bit.

Probably Omni-tone (I think that's what it's called) voices, when a person or thing is speaking, and it sounds like there is more than one, I don't know what it is about it, but it makes my skin crawl.
