I am pretty sure he's reflecting to "space marines" like Gears of War and possibly the protagonists in Starcraft 2. Two games who depict some serious brotherhood between guys in power armor. As for 40k, well, The Emperors Children are probably pretty close to gay, being pink dressed hedonists...
