I completely agree. Games are still in their infancy, and that means developers are still struggling to learn how to present narrative to players in interactive and fluid ways, but that doesn't mean that we should be satisfied with what middling attempts have already been revealed.

I don't think that RPGs provide an optimal storytelling environment. Doling out story as a reward for grinding and completing uninteresting battles doesn't appeal to me. Story is something that should be built through every encounter and every conversation the player has.

Long games are the problem, not short games. Padding what should be a 20 hour game with 10+ hours of bullshit doesn't make it any more satisfying to play.
Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't enjoy a game because of your age or gender. Play what you like, for as long as you like, and you're bound to have a good time. :)
I voted for fire, but it really depends on the specific game we're talking about. For example, I picked Charmander in Red and Cyndaquil in Silver, but I picked Turtwig in Pearl. I skipped the third generation so I've got nothing to say about that.
