my friend over MSN has just lovingly informed me that to use the something awful forums you have to pay a fiver just to be able to post on there, and then a further fiver to have an avatar, am i the only one who thinks that this is bullshit ?
i've never actually used the website myself, i'm escapist through and through, so maybe you lot can help me out

SA has been pretty stuck up its own ass for quite awhile now, so this isn't really that surprising. I guess they figure being able to post on their forums with the other "goons" is a privilege people will shell out money for.

Personally I think you could just go to 4chan and get the same quality dialogue without all the bullshit.

I'd have to make a damn well amazing .gif avatar to make it worth that much.
And I still wouldn't do it because I could use the money to hire someone to kill whoever made that policy.

What? You have to pay money to use a crappy humor site's forums?
...
Does not compute. System shutting down.

If you actually pay money to use Something Awful's forum, then you have just done Something Awfully Stupid. *everyonelovesbadpuns*

Wow. I can't wait to see how many people waste their money!
Well, the forum does have over 130,000 registered, with 2 million active threads and a further 2.5 million archived. Costs a fortune to keep all those servers running and thus you have to pay

Apparently >_>

So? They have a right to do that, and if people wanna waste their money on a forum, let 'em. What's the story here? Not like you're forced to sign up and pay, just ignore it. If people don't wanna shell out the money, it won't grow and it'll stagnate and eventually they'll get rid of it...in theory, but I guess this would be something of a special circumstance, or would it? Can a forum survive on its own current member base without growth?
