There's never been a game that's held my attention for very long. Even incredibly long games such as Xenoblade Chronicles X, which I love to death despite its flaws, I only played for about 50 hours before putting it down and never picking it back up. So, honestly, I can't really say for certain.

No one game is going to hold my attention long, let alone a lifetime.

I'd pick something new that I haven't played yet, maybe the new Mirror's Edge or Total War, play it a few times then find a new hobby.
Damn, I was about to come in here and suck all the fun out of the topic, but you beat me to it.

In all seriousness, I'll have to agree with this logic. If I was restricted to playing a single game for the rest of my life, I would simply pick one last game with a large amount of content, then leave gaming behind forever after the first year or so.
There's no way any one game could entertain me for the rest of my life.

Easy: Sonic & Knuckles.

Just getting to play the Doomsday Zone is more than enough to get me to replay this game over and over again for all eternity.

The question is in the title. If you had to make a choice to play 1 game for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Mine would be:

DayZ
Poor choice.
If the other players choose to play other games, you will be the only one in the game...

For me it will be Magic The Gathering from 1997.
Not the perfect game mind you, but it have a good A.I. and you can built your Deck as you like.

Disgaea. Any game in the series would do. There is just so much you can do if you are willing to invest the time.

Neverwinter Nights or Minecraft. Ya know, something that keeps getting updated in some fashion.
Neverwinter Nights though, as amazing a game as it is, isn't getting updated anymore, even with community content, isn't it? It's getting pretty old and though I haven't checked its community activity in a long while, I'm assuming that's the state of it.

As for me, Unreal Tournament 4. Now, is it finished? Nope.

But will it be? Yep. Will it be awesome? If they keep heading in the direction they're going, abso-freaking-lutely. Will it have mods out the ASS? Yep. Will those mods be insanely varied and powerful and wonderful, some of them even turning into whole games a la Red Orchestra and Killing Floor due to the UE4 being so sleek and powerful? You're damn right. Also helps that the UE4 is constantly getting updated as well. And furthermore, UE4 and UT4 are completely free.

So yeah, UT4, by the sheer power and versatility and openness of UE4 wins hands down.
I can update it myself with the creation software. I spent a lot of time making my own worlds no one else played. Plus there are a lot of unknowns in this hypothetical. Like can I try to get other people to play with me?

I like Never Winter Nights too. Spent over a decade on that game on player made servers so I know how much staying power it has. Including those its definitely my go-to: so long as I can play on servers with other players. PLayermade persistent worlds in NWN have been the best gaming experiences I have ever had.

That pretty much Guild Wars 2 for me seeing how I still played that game everyday over others especially when I got a list of bought games to play!

I really wish they abolish the achievement system as that is the sole reason why I keep playing it everyday (I know it's a addiction).

Fun question!

I tend to replay my favorite games over and over.

Initially I want to say S.T.A.L.K.E.R SoC, as I think it might be my favorite game... but this isn't necessarily about favorites, its about a long-term endurance test- we are talking about for the rest of my life, so something that allows for a ton of variety would be key, and perhaps a game I can mod myself to taste, like Minecraft.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

I've played it for about 150 hours so far, and

1. haven't finished all the quests,
2. only used one weapon type of 12 for all of my 150 hours,
3. have not earned all of the armor sets available,
4. still haven't even seen, let alone fought a couple monsters,
5. have not been able to solo some of the endgame monsters (which, IMO, is the best thing about playing MH - soloing a super-difficult boss.

I loved that game, but one thing it definitely does not have is good AI. Watching the AI opponent make boneheaded decisions was part of the entertainment. The more recent MTG games are a lot smarter, largely because the fixed decks allow them to understand the deck you are playing. Though I still prefer Shandalar.

Really/ To be honest I was very young when I played it, so maybe you are right.
Also I never played the new ones cause as you said the decks are premade...
Honest to God, the whole point of MTG is taking new cards and trying to adapt them to your recent card deck.

Civilization 4 or 5, particularly if I can load and unload mods at will. The games on their own have huge replay value and there are mods that are effectively new games.

Probably Skyrim. The sheer scope of the game and the massive number of mods make it enjoyable to replay, and then there are the more ambitious mods like these:

I mean seriously, mods to continue a Stromcloak victory into full war with the Aldmeri Dominion, another introducing an orsimir-based conflict in a new area at the edge of Skyrim, an attempt at recreating all of Tamriel in Skyrim, a DLC sized quest mod that sends you through the planes of Oblivion, a collaborative mod focusing on a quest to defeat the Altmer Lich Mannimarco, an attempt to recreate The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in Skyrim, and what is effectively a different game using Skyrim's engine.

I swear, that kind of thing makes me feel like I'm cheating for questions like this.
