I'll go with this list in no particular order:

God of War
Mass Effect
Tekken (5 or 6)
Prince of Persia (the Sands of Time trilogy)
Warcraft 3
Hit Man
Devil May Cry (any of them just not the 2nd one)
Knights of the Old Republic
Rezident Evil 4
Batman Arkham Asylum

I think these are some of the best and revolutionary games that dropped maybe ahead of their time. All very well made, with a nice captivating story, great mechanics, awesome atmosphere and pure nerdgasm.

There are lots of others that could make the list such as:

Grand Theft Auto
Max Paine
Mortal Kombat
Tomb Raider
World of Warcraft
Half Life
Legend of Zelda
Mario
Metroid
Starcraft
Transformers War for Cybertron
Tales of Monkey Island
Diablo
Fallout
Justice League Heroes(mostly for the incredibly fun co-op)

No offence taken. There is some cross over in our tastes just not in our top 10's. I really like Doom, San Andreas, God of War, Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario Brothers. Most of the games on your list I have never played and in the case of MMORPG's, interplay RPG's and RTS's I've never played anything in the genre.

I wasn't suprised that a couple of people so far have commented on GTA IV (I presume as it is not mentioned explicitly you didn't like it) as it did seem to divide people. But thats what great about gaming (and life) if we all liked the same thing the world would be pretty boring or perfect not sure which!
I'm glad I managed to come off civilly, It's 7 am and I'm currently trying to readjust my sleep cycle; which means staying awake for two days then crashing at 7pm. :(

The list isn't my top 10, but it's certainly the 10 games I'd suggest to someone who had a limited time to enjoy gaming.

My top ten would include more games similar to each other and quite a few obvious answers like "OMG Portal!" and "Bioshock! Duh!".
My top ten isn't very original, especially on these forums, so I figured a ten most important to understanding gaming/as many genre's as possible in only 10 games would be more interesting to read.

Sorry to hear about your sleep pattern, I hope it balances out soon.

I aimed for a top 10 of games "that should be played" but I was aware it would end up being "top 10 games I have played" but with some effort to cover a number of genres and they are all games I would recommend. There are so many game I haven't played (Zelda: OoT, Mario Galaxy, World of Warcaft, Goldfinger most of the games on your list) that I could never offer a very authoritive top 10. Having said that of course the nature of the list is its subjectivity.

GTA 4 ten times.

Seriously though (although rather reflecting my ten favourite games as opposed to the "most important/influential" or the ten games which offer the broadest understading of gaming):

1. GTA IV
2. Vice City
3. COD 4
4. Tetris (Gameboy version)
5. Mario Kart (SNES)
6. Manhunt
7. Fallout 3
8. Resident Evil 2
9. Tekken 3
10. Super Mario Land
Out of interest, how come you love both Vice City and GTA 4, but not San Andreas? I suppose it is somewhat subjective, but I just find it the pinnacle of the series and definitely an improvement in pretty much every single way on Vice City in the very least :p
I do like San Andreas but not enough to make the top 10. Vice City for me captures a feel for a time better than San Andreas (it felt more focused) and I also think it had a better soundtrack (Flock of Seagulls FTW). Basically I enjoyed it more than San Andreas.

GTA IV for me was just hugely immerssive and absorbing game. I adore that it is more "down to earth" than San Andreas (I know a lot of people hated this). I found the protagonsit the most likeable of any GTA, really liked the car physics and mechanics such as escaping police and the cover system. Its my favourite game of all time for these reasons amongst others.

I do like San Andreas, but not enough to make the top 1o, perhaps if they hadn't included jet packs and dildos and had used a different frame of reference to the cycle of black urban youth films of the early 90's (did love the Terminator 2 homage with the lorry though).
Fair enough, just different tastes then, I loved the whole "less focused" thing cause you had so much more to do and stuff :)

I'm afraid being Serbian doesn't help with liking GTA 4... the protagonist's Serbian is awful, as is everyone else's on the cast, it boggles my mind that they hired random Americans or sth. to play those people than actual ex-Yu people when I'm sure there are plenty available.. or at least someone who has spent enough time speaking Serbian to actually speak it fluently rather than at the quality of a guy who just picked up a dictionary and is struggling to read the words out of it right. The fact we have a ton of war movies that have done the "war-torn protagonist" thing to death (and much better than GTA 4 in a lot of cases) doesn't help either, though I would've enjoyed it if it was done right :\

The down to earth thing was awesome on some levels (driving, cover etc.), sucky on others. What I hated most though was the phones and the fact there was so little to do once you were done with the main missions (and those didn't take too long either). I played every GTA from GTA 2 for ages well past the point of being done with the missions, even past the 100% completion in Vice City, but GTA 4 held my attention for less than a week after I got through the missions.

Oh and the radio sucked for the most part :<
I can imagine the poor voice acting would be annoying (passed me by I assumed he was either Eastern European or Russian but had no frame of reference in terms of authenticity.

Personally I've found a lot to do since finishing the story (three times). I love the Liberty City of GTA IV enough to just to spend hours driving about.

As you say though different tastes :)

Crap. Damn me for posting so late into the Tread. Any a ways, here's my list... I know many of them already been listed, but how gives a hoot and a half, eh?

no.1 Parasite Eve (IMO, the best jRPG set in modern time)

no.2 Zelda: A link to the past (How many hours didn't I spend there?)

no.3 Super Metroid (Man, was that a hardcore game or what?)

no.4 Monkey Island (Pirates, and humour, and pirates-ghosts, insult sword fighting )

no.5 Mega Man (I still have nightmares)

no.6 Silent Hill 2 (Freud, this one is for you.)

no.7 Baldur's Gate (the series)

no.8 Rome total war (As far as strategy games goes, this is it.)

no.9 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (Okej, WTF H.P.Lovecraft?!)

no.10 Psycohauts (Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. An visual representation of the mind?)

And a few honourable mentions
Half life
Fallout Tactics (The one the fan-boys hate.)
Resident Evil 4 (Special edition Game Cube)
Icewind Dale 2

10. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 -- One of the best platformers of the 90s.
9. Super Mario World -- Same thing as above, only slightly better gameplay.
8. Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes -- You will have a blast playing this game.
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- A fucking awesome mascot fighter with fun, simple gameplay, and cameo appearances from Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake make it even better. Plus, the single player is an epic tale.
6. Metal Gear Solid 2 -- Some of the best graphics on the PS2, refreshing gameplay, and an incredibly mind bending story.
5. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance -- One of the best JRPG's I have ever played. Amazing graphics, loveable characters, excellent turn based gameplay, and an amazing story.
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker -- I loved it more than Ocarina of Time, which is pretty big. The graphics are orgasmic as well.
3. Mega Man 1 -- Fun game with challenging gameplay and sharp graphics, at least for NES standards.
2. Sonic Colors -- definitely one of the best recent 3D platformers of 2010.
1. Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil -- You just have to play it to know what I'm talking about. It's one of the most beautiful, funny, thoughtful, heartrending, complex and enjoyable games ever made. My very best. YOU HAVE GOT TO PLAY THIS GAME!

And here's to Klonoa hopefully being in the next Super Smash Bros. Even though it will never happen, we can all dream, right?

In the following order:

Hitman 2
Monkey Island
Final Fantasy IX
Portal
Fallout NV GOTYE (it will most likely be out by the time I'm dying)
Doom
Half Life
Half Life 2 (and episodes)
Final Fantasy X
Shining Force 2 (the first video game I ever played)

I would probably cry all the way through those last 2. Seriously, they mean a lot to me.

anything but a Gauntlet Legends game....

Blue Warrior is about to die!

I would for sure play through MGS3, and Skies of Arcadia before death, after that I couldn't really care less.

Argh, one of these threads? This will inevitably boil down to our favorite games. Although this is not the case for my 10.

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2 (less so than the others though)
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (essential for more Big Boss backstory)
Half Life
Half Life 2
Final Fantasy 6
Deus Ex
Chrono Trigger

Essentials. You must play all of these before you die. The entire Metal Gear Solid franchise is an incredible story that would probably be a bestselling novel set if it were in book form instead of game form.
They said limited amount of time. Playing through all of MGS would take weeks.

Depends how fast you play them, really. It's quite easy to just blaze through them without paying much attention.
