Yeah, there's something to that effect on my profile. I call myself an leftist feminist queer or something like that. I generally just call myself "queer" because it also means "strange," (which is people's general impression of me) and also "homosexual" just makes my life sound a lot more...organized than it really is.
i swear half the threads i read that youve posted in you mention being a lesbian...ah well no harm in that, yay.
I am trying to find someone who will go all homophobe-troll on me. I have been on the internet for over a decade, been obnoxious as hell (as you can well guess), and I've still never been directly called a homophobic name. I've also never been called a feminazi, which really makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong. I'm never going to get all my Web Scout badges at this rate.

I see myself as somewhat of a rude dickhead and will go out of my way to annoy "feminazi's" - merely for my own pleasure without meaning it, mind you.
Luckily for me, two of my friends got into relationships with two girls... sisters of eachother and both highly emancipated. I try to aggitate them everytime I see them.
Last weekend while drinking in the pub: "Women are only emancipated when they want to. As soon as someone mentions that there is place to work in construction, or they need to lift something as much as a gymmat, they are suddenly these weak and feeble creatures that need manly help everywhere they go. The only way a woman should work is on her back".

It works everytime ;).
Much to learn, young padawan. It's perfectly possible to annoy devoted feminists without spewing out-and-out sexist crap. You just have to be more subtle. Or engage them in feminist debate. I have a feminist friend who I do this all the time with. It's great fun and we both come out of it hot, sweaty and pissed off.
How to do this, though? Well let's take your drivel as a starting point. Delete the last line- it's utter trash said purely for the rise. I'd change the rest into, "While many women enjoy the freedoms they garner from emancipation, they also aren't against accepting the help and support of men whose old-school sense of gallantry compels them to open car doors for women, or pull out the chair at the dinner table, for example. I ask you, isn't this simply another form of sexism, one just as damaging as others, as it continues to classify women as fragile things in need of masculine help?"
[/pomp]
It's still pretty stupid but the thing is it sounds reasonable.
Funny enough, just today the newspaper reported that the last feminist magazine in the Netherlands had to accept male-sollicitors for the position of editor in chief if he was the best candidate.

Also, Saskwach, thanks for the advise. I'll gladly take it over, then, when they lost me somewhere down the lane I'll just follow up with:

"Let me translate - Shoes and shopping good. Please nod in agreement!"

And mshcherbatskaya... what happened to: Don't feed the trolls ;). Don't worry, I'll contribute in a worthy manor without bringing this up again, unless I deem it necessary - or funny

It's important to remember, when introducing non-gamers to games, that you can't just start with whatever game you like. Any game involving an element of reflexes is usually bad. This might be why games are more prominent in Japan; a lot of their games are turn-taking, and wait for your input.
Also, if the game uses the whole controller, something's wrong. One of my favorite non-gamer games is Super Monkey Ball. Most of the minigames basically just use the control stick and the A button. The main game itself just uses the control stick.

My dad doesn't ever play any games whatsoever, but I did manage to get him to play through the first case of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It worked well; the controls were simple and what you had to do basically made sense. Plus, he is sort of a fan of murder mysteries. When he knew the answer to what he was being asked, but just didn't know how to present it, I helped him out and he soon got the hang of it. I doubt he'll go on to playing any other games, or even more of the same, but I bet it was probably an interesting experience for him.

For me, it has been much more difficult to teach girls how to become gamers than to teach guys, but the deciding factor in whether or not a person will become a gamer is how quickly they can adapt to new situations within a game.

As an experiment, I let my 3 female cousins play Sonic 1 on the Megadrive with the minimum amount of guidance from me (basically just teaching them the controls) to see which ones would become interested in gaming.

In Sonic 1, there are a number of different types of environmental obstacles that need to be negotiated in order to progress, such as loop-de-loops, half-pipes and vertical walls. You could see the difference between those cousins who would become gamers or not. The one who learnt to think, experiment and try new ways of getting past these obstacles went on to become the gamer, while the other two would not adapt their strategy, kept on getting stuck or killed and lost their interest quickly.

I think that it is this mindset of wanting to experiment that separates the gamers from the philistines. If you do not have this, then the best bet is you will only ever be a casual gamer.

I've introduced my girl to GTAIV, after a shaky start she went to a club and got a lapdance, this reminded her it had been awhile since she had given me a lapdance and did so, GTA is the best game ever! (virtual aphrodisiac?)

Hmm, I'm tempted to call BS, then pics or it didn't happen. Then I realize this is the Escapist not Newgrounds hehe

Can't take pics when you don't have free hands ;)

Tbh it's not the first time a GF has used sexual favours to tear me away from a game! Win-win situation by my reckoning.

It's quite strange/interesting watching someone play GTA who has no intention whatsoever of committing any major felony's or hurting people etc. (she would only steal cars that didn't have occupants), additionally she was quite happy just 'looking around', experimenting with stores and pedestrians...and driving with care!

I tried playing SSB Melee with my mother. I couldn't lose as quickly as she did even when I was trying to lose as quickly as possible.

I suspect the reason for th 10% is less on the gaming end of things and more on the gaming forum side. While the girl:guy gamer ratio is surely higher than 10%, the hardcore girl:guy ratio is a bit more skewed.
Note: Let's not get into the semantics of hardcore; you know what I mean and unless you have facts to refute me move along. This isn't the fight you're looking for.
In my class at school, there are 8 out of 13 boys who consider themselves gamers. There is only 1 out of 15 girls though. This makes the boy/girl ratio about 11 percent girls, this ratio also repeats itself (not entirely accurate) in nearly all the schools where I know somebody which I have asked. So for my age (17), the 10 % ratio is pretty accurate, at least in my city (Tromso, Norway). I have no idea what the ratio might be in the rest of the world, and speak only on behalf of my own experience.

Hmmm, you might have me dead to rights here or, and I'm not sure here, you're supporting my argument. Are you saying that I'm wrong about the forum side of things or that you suspect the ratio is again because outspoken "hardcore gamerness" is not a thing as many girls get in to or admit to?

I conviced my buddies to try Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3, which opened them up to the world of RPG's, which prompted them to Mass Effect and other similar games.

I've got both my mother and my little sister addicted to the Nintendo Gamecube. :O Animal Crossing FTW

ive tried teaching my dad to play halo 2 and halo 3 on the xbox 360, but he sucked =( and got bored quickly

so i changed gear and tried to get him into racing games. he was alright at forza but frequently crashed (as n00bs do in forza, probably wasnt the best game for a first-timer)

then i realised that it was the xbox controller that he was having trouble with. after watching him fail at halo i worked out that he could not coordinate two joysticks at once (like for Fraser J.A.'s gf)

so i showed him hl2 on the pc. he knows how to use a mouse and keyboard because of his work, so the controls werent much of a step for him. he really liked hl2, especially the last level with the super-gravity gun.

i guess you have to start non-gamers off on something they already have experience in before you can move them onto the new stuff

P.S. he still sucks at halo, but challenges me in hl2dm. i showed him garry's mod but he still doesnt understand it .
