If you're like me, you don't necessarily grab up novels and comics set in the universe of a game franchise that you like. More often than not, they come across like bad fan-fic or needlessly explain away things you loved in the games. And they rarely tie in with the actual continuity of a title or series.
Well, Mass Effect being a universe where every detail affects every other, it seems that the spin-off material actually DOES play a role in the events of the upcoming Mass Effect 3 (slated for a March 2012 release).
