EDIT!

Sorry, seems I jumped at a silly and stupid story too fast. Seems the authority involved changed their minds and took back the fine in question. For good reason or because it was given them too much bad press we may never know.

Update: $535 Fine Rescinded In Baby Bird Rescue

?The citation is null and void,? U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Bill Butcher told msnbc.com on Tuesday. ?We?ve rescinded it.?

?They [the agent and state trooper] had gone to inquire about the health of the woodpecker,? Butcher said. ?At that point, they determined that no further action was necessary.?

Despite this, Butcher said, the citation was processed unintentionally. He added that the agency has apologized to Capo and will send her a formal letter explaining the clerical error.

Is transporting these things addictive or something?
Surely that law is to stop poachers and people who want to sell the birds not a woman and her 11 year old kid who aren't doing any harm.

Stop it, America. No other country on the planet has enforced laws to violently stupid that it has actually made me want to become a criminal.
C'mon CJ, England, Canada and Australia have all got equally stupid laws. America's just got more of them because it's bigger.
I don't think England has ones that are that stupid. We got stupid, but this one takes the cake.

EDIT: After a quick search I found this article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1568475/Ten-stupidest-laws-are-named.html

Thing is, these aren't stupid, just old. They were (mostly) sensible laws that just got severely outdated. What's your excuse America? You aren't old enough to outdate things!

Yeah that is a good point. Did you know that in Canada it is illegal to buy something that costs more then 25 cents and pay for it with only pennies? Fucking laws. Always foiling my plans.

On topic:
This is pretty ridiculous. Like wow.

Here's 10 for you:
It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament
It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down
In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store
Mince pies cannot be eaten on Christmas Day
In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter
A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman?s helmet
The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the king, and the tail of the queen
It is illegal to avoid telling the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing
It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour
In the city of York it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow

And I can dig out more if you need ;)

OT: The Law itself isn't bad. It's the anal way that it's interpreted that's causing the problem.

I still don't understand why they captured the bird and were toting it around in the first place...

Still, the scarier thing to me is how this flaw of law enforcements equates to all the people in the comments blaming liberals. >.>

What happened here was that they broke the law. Not in the way the law was trying to prevent, but they still did it. And they didn't think to not flaunt the bird about in public.
The fine is exhorbitant for the incidence, but it wouldn't hurt for them to have put in a little bit of forethought.

If I, say, found a stranger's baby in danger, I'd sure as Hell try to keep it safe, but I would contact the authorities first thing and explain the situation in a way that covered my ass.

I posted that exact list in my edit. As I said there, they're just outdated, there's only about 3 that weren't relevant at some point during our history. And some of them aren't even laws anymore, at some point someone decided to have meetings of the houses of parliament to discuss and potentially repeal outdated laws when people bring them up.

Yeah, there was a Telegraph competition sometime in the past.

There are still some really kooky laws around though. The Prevention of Terrorism Act, The Criminal Justice Bill, The Sexual Offences Act.

(48 hour detention without human rights on suspicion, power to destroy someone's house and charge them for it, rape can only be performed with a penis)

I assume you mean population size, because Canada is physically bigger.

The moral of this story (after reading the edit):

NEVER assume the authorities are always in the right, we need constant vigilance against injustice and make our voices heard to stand up against them.

If this hadn't be reported quite as much I suspect they would have pursued that fine to the very end.

The authorities were only doing their job. You want someone to spite, spite the ***** that reported the act of kindness. That's how they found out.

Those are not modern day laws, and even if they where, I'm sure nearly every single person in this country has eaten mince pies on Christmas day. I personally think they should get arrested by the trifle police for crimes against pudding...hehe.
