So yesterday has seen the release of a 13 minute gameplay preview of the new AC4 on Youtube.

<youtube=ICemupWG56U>

As someone who's given up on the series after AC2 I've got to say this game starts to look absolutely brilliant. Like a combination of the good mechanics of AC2 combined with the awesome nautical gameplay of the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl game I found in a sale bin years ago.
I am seriously considering preordering the game and I almost never preorder anything.

So anyway, I thought this was interesting enough to warrant a thread. What does the rest of the forum think of the game after having watched this video?

EDIT: Nevermind, I seem to have <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.823031-13-minutes-of-Assassins-Creed-4-gameplay#19916358>missed that news. My bad, sorry.

I'm actually really rather impressed with this. I mean, I've liked the look of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag since it was announced and although I admit that it doesn't look like much of an assassin's game, it still looks fun and I still reckon I'll enjoy it. The free-roaming and instant switching between land and ship modes looks neat, as do the exploration aspects of the game. All I really want to see now is how Edward's character is handled and see whether or not he'll be more charismatic, like Ezio, or at the very least more likeable than Connor.

I was waiting for it to crash honestly, they must be playing it on a pc. Anyway, ya it looks really fun but hopefully there is more stealth elements. The ship action looks amazing.

It blows my mind how folks can hate on CoD churning out similar gameplay elements over and over while the AC series is one of the biggest offenders of this but doesn't get nearly as much butthurt. I never played AC 3 but I heard the naval action was fun. So it would seem in true AC form, they grabbed the one thing that did well and made an entire game based off of it.

Board meeting minutes:
Y'all liked the boats? Result: AC - Pirates.

I'm honestly hoping this turns out great. Though if it falls into the old Assassins Creed mantra of stupid easy combat, repetitive side quests, and collectibles out the wing wang then I'll quickly lose interest. Make me WANT to use stealth and blowdarts and not just run into everyone and spam the counter button.

I believe they said it was PS4 gameplay.

YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I longed for a decent pirate game for AGES. In fact, since the original Pirates! on Amiga
I'm afraid it won't sell all too well, even though it bears the AC-name.
But if this is any good, I'll play it for years

I don't know. On one hand I'm pissed that they're milking the series. On the other hand I can't really complain because I enjoyed all the games and they are trying to do new things. And naval combat looks amazing. And it's the pirates. I think I'm getting hyped again. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

I'm split by this, on the one hand I hated AC3 and part of that was due to the Naval combat, a game that seems highly based on that mechanic doesn't really appeal to me. Then again it looks so damned beautiful (something I felt was missing from AC3) and perhaps they've honed it into a more enjoying part of the gameplay.

It looks so damned pretty compared to 3...

I am sold. Call me a sucker but I really dig the pirate element. At least they've addressed the chase scenes. The freedom to gun him down outright, follow his ship in mine or just straight up jump on to his ship from the dock is really appealing to me.

When was the last time we had a good open world pirate game? No really I want to know. I am going to be preordering this tomorrow.
2004 or so?

I guess it depends on what you thought of Risen 2.

OT: It looks like a pretty sweet pirate game.

Too bad about that Assassin's Creed name being slapped on it.

Seriously though, it looks pretty fun. The more it distances itself from Desmond the stronger the narrative will be at his point, to be honest, so I'll admit I'm interested in seeing what path they're going to take with it.

It was called <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_%28video_game%29>Pirates of the Caribbean, a rather obscure 2003 game veeeeery loosely based on the film, and it had the best damn pirate sea fights I have ever played. Different ammo and cannon calibers for different tasks, wind and ship type as a major role in deciding what you could attack and what would either seriously injure/sink your vessel or escape from you into or with the wind; also storms that endangered your ship but also helped you escape or maim enemies. And you could hire crew in taverns or recruit them from entered ships, swap ships if the captured one was better or make an officer captain and start a little fleet, trade stolen cargo, even take whole cities if your ships were powerful enough.
And you really could work your way up from a small nutshell with a shirt as a sail to a mighty 100 cannon ship of the line or (with cheats) the nigh-indestructible Black Pearl.

Really, I can't imagine that the AC crew hasn't played that game.
It's 10 years old now and I still play it sometimes, that's how good it is.

Same sentiment here.
While I'm not particularly excited for this one, I know I'm still going to buy it.
Maybe not day 1 but I'm going to buy it.

I'm rather annoyed the stealth system seems more polished then 3 (60-100 more dollars to fix one (many) developer's mistakes).

Also, next-gen and still seeing obvious clipping? =/

Do you not remember Sid Meier's Pirates?

Damn that game was so good. Really, look it up, with Sid Meier's name in the title, you already know its a timesink.

OT: Definitely looks better than Assassins Creed 3, that's for sure. Let's hope the first several hours don't have the game handholding you around the Caribbean.

That was the one I was talking about, actually. The remake was released in 2004.

It just so happens that a year earlier was when the Pirates of the Caribbean game unrelated to the film in all but name was also released for the PC. And in between, all we've really had of note has been Risen 2, with the other alternatives being mostly pretty crap and/or forgettable.
