I dislike lol, but I honestly can't see what is wrong with leet speak. People never seem to take the middle ground (who I know) it's either all leet and memes, even IRL. Or it's the spawn of the devil and should never desecrate their ears with it's non-Queen's Englishness.

I think a part of it's popularity is due to the fact that only one person can have a unique X-Box Live Gamertag, PSN ID or similar online handle.

After the first genius called themselves SNIPER, the next fount of original thought had to call themselves SN1PER, and then after that the 3rd member of the Original Thinkers Club had to call themselves SN1P3R... and so on.

Saying that, the trend probably first originated with customised license plates on cars, in which people would try to spell out their name or a word, but were forced to use a combination of numbers and letters for the late to be valid (or like the X-Box Tags, had to substitute some vowels for numbers because they weren't the first person with their name to get a custom plate).

I don't really have an opinion on l33tspeak. I heard that bianary code is becoming the rage these days though. A shortining I dislike is 'lulz' though.

I agree with that, and to be honest, this thread is very relevant for me. I'll just quote myself from a conversation:

Language evolves. It is does not regress. Thus 1337 5peek is a mutation that should be quarantined and 'neutralised'. I suppose it's fair enough if people use it in an ironic way, but the trouble is it's hard to tell what tone someone is communicating in online, what with it being a visual-only medium.
