I actually like them. They can provide some lulz at times when you get an achievement for something you didn't know there was an achievement for.

I was playing Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising on Multiplayer and was in a gunship raining hell and rockets down on people. I start taking fire from an APC loaded with people up on a hill, so I decide to charge them. Just as I was about to get a nice shot on them with my rockets and he gets a nice shot at my rotor shaft, disintegrating the blades. So I watch as start to drop. Well apparently luck just so had it to where I crash landed right onto his APC, destroying it and killing everyone inside (8 or so people I think).

So then I hear the Trophy chime and see that I have been given a silver trophy called "The Sky is Falling!", with the requirements that I get a kill with my chopper without the use its weapons.

I lol'd.

Yes, but I don't appreciate developers who simply make a series of generic achievements that you get after every level for each difficulty. I prefer Easter Egg hunt achievements and generally wacky achievements.

well im a pc gamer, so i never really get any achievements, the last game i remember had them was batman AA and i never found them to be mood breaking.

but for me it happens 2-3 time a year, if i played xbox i would likely go crazy.

Yes! Achievements are a great incentive! They reward people for doing strange stuff with nothing more than a flashy card saying "I did something strange".

If it only worked that way in real-life, don't you think?

I honestly couldn't care less. I don't play for achievments... For example when the Escapists released the wave of badges for watching certain content, I didn't rush to watch/read all the content on the website. I play the game to have fun. Fun for me is not killing myself to get some little 20 point reward. If you need a game to tell you that you achieved something, I think that's sad.
Also ou can turn off achievment pop ups in the xbox options page.

Yes. There another collectible to collect in games. Maybe they don't need to pop-up in game but I don't think they detract from games because if you don't like then you just avoid them. Although having them not pop-up would be nice sometimes...*writes down idea*

They tend to make me play the games for longer. In older games you finished the game and there wasn't much left to do. This sytem gives you plenty to do, some of them can be fun to get, like keeping a corpse in crackdown, in the air as long as possible by using explosives.

Why else would I lug a little guarding gnome in HL2 Ep 2 on Hard?

Achievement Babeh! =]
If you liked that, you'll love the achievement for L4D2: Guardin' Gnome! Look it up!
Already did it on Expert Realism :D

We got lucky, the place we dropped the gnome (on either side) was the correct side! so we didn't have to look for the gnome before we ran :3

I find them absolutely useless, unless they reward you with something, or are fun to do. I didn't go for the high score in Super Mario Bros, I don't think anyone did. I see achievements as just the same.

While I usually love achievements, I do believe that some games are better without them. The idea of playing Planescape: Torment with achievements gives me shivers. I wouldn't mind playing Icewind Dale with them though.

Carrot on a stick. As long as it can lure gamers to do what designers want them to do, it is not only legit, but also a damn good idea, and marketing ploy.
