If she had died I have no doubt that she would be in line for a Darwin Award. How idiotic can you get! If she was living in Britain at that age she could move away and live by herself and no one could have stopped her. People need to live more in the real world and be exposed to it more. By this you would have more common sense and independency that would at least help to prevent instances like this from happening.
just to comment on your post in america(includes canada...sadly) the culture is set to 18 being the appropriate age to be on your own. Before that age you are too young and foolish.

P.S: the storie is pretty odd(maybe the dad is a molestor)

p.s.s: did anyone else see there was an article on flavored breast milk. LOL thats fucked up.
I know that I was merely commenting that in Britain a person at that age is judged to be old enough to be on your own and have enough commen sence to avoid things like this (Not that this is always true) and that if she was living in Britain there would be little her family could do about the move.

I still think that she would have recieved a Darwin Award.

You'd be surprised:

The person who mentions the age on my profile will be hunted down.
Now I know how to make the fastest sled ever.

I just don't get why she destroyed a computer and Xbox. Did she forget that you can just clear history and reformat if you have to.
You're talking about someone who blew a ton of cash to go see a stranger in peurto rico, does it really surprise you she destroyed them. It's a shame shes not a blond or you could bust a pretty good dumb blond joke here.

At 16... well it's up to her. I was living on my own at 17, and here in the UK you can legally get married, have sex and make babies at 16. Storm in a tea-cup if you ask me.

Wow... That's ridiculous, and I'd add more to that but the people above me have already said it all.

My only concern is that this is going to be blamed on games.
Yeah... even though it's not the fault of gaming, it will enevitably get blamed.
But i'm kinda used to games getting blamed for everything.

I know that this won't sit right with most people here, but I have a sympathy for the girl.

If she had only known him for a month and she flew away and ended up dead in a ditch I would be laughing. The way the article explains it, is that she has know him for some time. Also it never said that he was a predator or anything like it. The mother said he was a predator, but it sounds like that is just her worst fear coming true.

Now let me explain my position. I have met up with people I met on the internet. We hung out go to really know each other and it was a grand ol' time. Mind you it was with someone I had known for two years.

So the point is this is being blown out of proportion by the media (like any news story with gaming) and now that Aftab has stuck her grimy hand in this we will hear more of it.

It's a sad time in the world of interactive gaming when dumb kids allow themselves to be placed in this danger ad the parents deserve to lose there kids if there not keeping an eye on them or atleast trying to get involved in there interests. It's just one more step towards a more safe and secure family.

"...fulfill her dreams of becoming a boxer..."

Did I really just read that? I hope I did, because it would be a refreshing departure from the "I fell in love with a person online who really could be anybody," situation that always seems to pop up.

The only up side to this is that stories like this cause such a reaction. If it happened more often, would we really be this worked up about it? Personally, I take that as a good sign.

Okay. I really don't get this. What did the guy do wrong? He didn't rape her, he didn't kidnap her, he didn't try to kill her, he took her in, and let her stay with his family when the stupid girl went and flew to Puerto Rico to meet him. Sure, he may have encouraged it, but still.

The only people to blame here it the girl's parents. They should have taught her better.

i did. my mom works at a high school that i volunteer time at, i actually got into a debate with a fairly thin girl about how "fat" she was and the definitions of beauty from back before america was explored to now and she claims i don't know anything and i'm a history person....she then asked her history teacher who proved me right and still claims i'm wrong.....
teenagers are some of the most idiotic beings on the planet these days. i was talking with a teacher the other day about learning now vs 6 years ago when i graduated, kids are all on cell phones all the time or playing with ipods or portable gaming systems so they don't learn anything in class anymore and the teachers have to dumb lessons and tests down so they can pass.

Wait, you're 16 yourself... (should be easy for you to hunt me down though if you're British, don't have as far to go...).

Seriously though, this girl was an idiot. Why did she do it in the first place, and why didn't the parents monitor her more closely? There was a rule in my old family home that we could only spend an hour on the PS2/PC/whatever in any one time and had to wait a few hours before going back on, and the PC was in a family room thatwas always in use so my parents could always monitor what I was doing on the internet. Time limits and parental supervision are so easy to do, and really do help stop this sort of thing from happening.

"It's not just the computer you have to worry about these days, strangers can also enter your children's lives through their VIDEO GAME systems" i love how the new correspondent emphasizes on that... I also love how she wanted to become a BOXER, i mean really? what kind of dream is that for a fat girl?

Total idiocy on her part. "I wanna be a boxer so I'll go to Puerto Rico to live with a guy I met on XBL." Holy f-ing crap. And she destroyed a good amount of money too to cover her tracks. If she has the logical reasoning to do that, then how the hell did she figure that she would go live with some total stranger in another country?

And yes, they will blame video games for this one. "Parents don't realize that kids are playing games and communicating" it says. The hell we are! It's just that most of us are talking about the game or, if we're immature, are trash talking the guy we just beat. We might talk about stuff that pertains to real life too, but I would think that the majority of us aren't stupid enough to go meet some person that we have never seen before in our lives with the exception their pixelated avatar. The idiotic ones that get on the news are the ones imprinted on everyone's minds though, and so people think that we all must be so gullible. One thing though. Did the guy actually do anything to her? I'd be amazed if he was actually trying to be some weird nice guy and was actually training her to box.

Edit: Oh, and no matter what you say, it has to be freaky as hell when you figure out your kid left the damn country to live with some person they met on the internet. Which isn't to say that you have the right to call him a predator or whatever if he actually had honest intentions. This might have been blown up a bit in my opinion (still think the girl is a damn idiot though) He didn't kill the girl, and it turns out he didn't do anything bad to her, then can he get out of jail?

On a serious note, This is just another inch on the big stick used to beat the masses into believing video games are evil, and that relationships over the internet are never wholesome. For all we know, they actually were in love, and he was willing to leave physical intimacy until she was above the legal age, We dont know because the only side of the story you get is the parents, who in most cases seem to only have a vague idea of a full story and then jump to conclusions which they then site as the truth. She should not have ran away, she should have waited till she could legally leave home, and if she had, her parents may have been upset, but it would have been legal, she could have stayed, the guy would not have been arrested and most likely given jail time, and a criminal record, and an inch would have been denied to the ever growing stick.
